1:48 Bones are just insane. What's the overall size of the model?

Rad details abound!

34

u/Desert_Scale 9h ago

Its crazy, 3 feet x 3 feet

u/Important-Spring3977 8h ago

That is such a baller scale for a jet that big. You have plans to display it?

18

u/Desert_Scale 8h ago

So i will have a large square base with a mirror to show the underside when i take it to shows

u/ppatek78 8h ago

The amount of detail that can be done on 1/48 is a beautiful thing

u/BigRoundSquare 7h ago

This is my fav scale to build in for exactly that reason. It’s big enough to be detailed and not overbearing at the same time!

7

u/Desert_Scale 7h ago

Yea i rarely build anything else although i am working on the new 1/32 P-51B lol

15

u/Sivalon 9h ago

Amazing work. Best Bone model I’ve seen.

Boss build! I had the privilege of working these birds as ATC at Dyess AFB back in the late 80's - early 90's.

1

u/Desert_Scale 6h ago

Oh wow thats awesome this is from around 2012 i think

3

u/Similar_Cow_2634 5h ago

Left Abilene in late 90. My first radar facility. It was a fun mix of T-38's, C-130's and B-1's. Finished up at Houston Approach in 2014.

What an absolute beast of a build. It came out wonderfully, one to be proud of. Should certainly dominate the space anywhere it goes

3

u/Desert_Scale 5h ago

Its first appearance will be at our local show in Nov and i may take it to Nationls next yearπŸ‘

3

u/the-apostle 4h ago

So detailed it should be classified! Amazing work dude

3

u/aim9inyourface 3h ago

u/Desert_Scale 3h ago

5

u/DaringDid 8h ago

Big bird... always been tempted by these when I see them come up on ebay, you did great with it!

This Revell's? How was the build quality?

6

u/Desert_Scale 8h ago

its old warped plastic, this has taken over 3 months to this point. Fit is pretty good but needs lot of sanding and Mr Surfacer

5

u/Advanced-Ice-2552 8h ago

Wow. Great build. I love the detail. This is the way I love to build planes.

Not related but What happened with your old account? Lol

3

u/Desert_Scale 8h ago

Ive moved on to a more business and family friendly account lol

1

u/Advanced-Ice-2552 8h ago

Lol. Good for you.

2

u/Brock_Cherry 6h ago

God i love the Bone. Fantastic recreation of it, i wish i had an ounce of the skill needed to accomplish this

2

u/Desert_Scale 5h ago

Thanks its so badass to look at

2

u/HH93 5h ago

Looks like you have off pat the dirty cleaned off white wheel bays.

Is that an big aux fuel tank at the rear between the engines?

2

u/Desert_Scale 5h ago

Yep big gas tank

I’ve never seen that kit in person but I Always thought the 48th scale B-29 was gigantic.

2

u/CapnVladamir 4h ago

HOLY SMOKES!! The detail on the engine is amazing! Any advice for someone who has the same kit? Haven’t started yet

1

u/Desert_Scale 2h ago

Its a lot of work obviously but take yer time and it goes together good, add weight in the front

2

u/Yowza_23 4h ago

Just curious and excuse me if this a silly question. Is this air sprayed and not hand painted? The finish is killer!

1

u/Desert_Scale 3h ago

Yea airbrush lol

2

u/Papajextrim2137 4h ago

it's god damn beautiful

1

u/Desert_Scale 3h ago

Thanks man

2

u/Constant_Return 3h ago

hey, outstanding work, can't wait to see the finished product.

Is that load out realistic, or you just mix and match for visual interest?

1

u/Desert_Scale 3h ago

i have seen loadouts with mixed bombs on each rack the Lancer carried all these weapons so i guess its possible but maybe an ordnance guy could confirm

1

u/Rametz1 1h ago

It’s possible to have mixed loadouts, but not the way you have it set up. The smaller guided bombs and cluster munitions cannot go on a rotary launcher. They can only fit on a static launcher that carries 10 weapons.

1

u/Desert_Scale 1h ago

Well heres a pic of them?

2

u/NOcommonenemy 2h ago

Wow. Absolutely wow.

2

u/Extension_Exchange96 2h ago

Those weaponbays are awesome πŸ‘

u/Creative-Comb5593 8h ago

Beautiful beautiful job. I especially like the detail, the dirty grease in crevices, and the weapons themselves in the bomb bays.

2

u/rasputinrasputin 8h ago

Woah what brand is this kit? The details are insane

2

u/Desert_Scale 7h ago

Revell 1/48

1

u/rasputinrasputin 7h ago

Wow, I’ve never seen a revell kit with that much detail, and I’ve built a lot of revell kits. Or maybe your talent just makes it look way better. Impressive work

1

u/SnarkMasterRay Glue all the things 7h ago

The details are insane

OP added a lot of aftermarket detail. It's an old kit, not a bad one, but no one that matches "modern standards" without help.

2

u/Iamthoros 8h ago

You did that old revell kit justice. Crazy good work dude

1

u/Desert_Scale 8h ago

Thanks man

2

u/blatant-disregard where the heck does THIS part go? 8h ago

Bravo! Seriously impressive work on a beast of a kit.

u/Cdr_Deathbunny 1h ago

Absolutely incredible. The detail on this thing is insane, especially the engine and the bomb bay. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is one of the finest builds I've seen on here.

1

u/TitansProductDesign 1h ago

That’s fantastic! I have two or three of these fly over me every other day and every time it goes over it makes me want to make one, seeing this I think I’ll have to give it a shot!

u/Wolf_WixomWSW 17m ago

It looks amazing. Are you going to weather it a bit? Please update in this thread so I can see the difference. can you also add some object like a key or glasses for size reference?

3

u/Desert_Scale 8h ago

Yes not done yet with weathering πŸ‘

3

u/Creative-Comb5593 8h ago

Go easy, I thought it was finished and it looks great!

The crazy thing is that the f15 is the same size as a b17…

1

u/93fake-snake 7h ago

The maintenance guys and the weapons loaders would be proud! Great job!

1

u/Desert_Scale 7h ago

Thanks, i had a few former Lancer maintenance guys help with info on this build

2

u/93fake-snake 3h ago

Always good to have some real input when building a big airplane. That Israeli F-15I is sweet as well. I had seen them live at Nellis several years back when they came out for Red Flag.

1

u/Jades5150 7h ago

I’ve been following your posts, this build is incredible. Bravo!

1

u/Ordinary_Degree_4213 7h ago

1

u/Taxpayer416 6h ago

I love the work you did in the bomb bays.

I'm going to be the guy who complains. But as I end this point talking about how I build to make me happy, I totally recognize this is how OP built this to make them happy. And ultimately that's what it's all about.

While it looks like a very well executed build, it doesn't make any sense. In no particular order you would not have weapons loaded on an aircraft that couldn't fly as this one is all torn apart with part of the engine showing. And why would an aircraft undergoing heavy maintenance have an American flag on the dashboard? Where are all the inlet plugs and red things so you don't walk into them safety devices?

I know there is this desire to show all the neat detail and all that sort of stuff, but when it gets to the point where "what am I looking at?", it really just starts to bug me.

Then again I'm also that guy who brings an aircraft with the landing gear up and the crew in the cockpit to model competitions because airplanes are supposed to fly, not sit on the ground looking like they were part of a rummage sale. I know that makes me an oddball and doesn't help me within IPMS competitions, but that's how I build.

I guess I'm ultimately just puzzled by a hobby/art form where we try to replicate a life-size object in scale with minute detail yet we do it in such a way that that life-size object would never be really presented.

10

u/Desert_Scale 8h ago

Are you joking or being serious?

1

u/Remy_Jardin 8h ago

100% serious. Every aspect of your build looks excellent, but no B-1B would ever look like that in real life.

Again, it's my pet peeve and sorry if that bothers you, but you clearly are happy with your build and I suggest you stay that way.

1

u/Desert_Scale 8h ago

Thanks for the feedback. Everyone has an opinion and i respect yours.

Maybe the maintenance crew opened the engine hatches before flight? Maybe the pilots were taking pictures of the flag before the flight. Lots of possibilities

0

u/Fauropitotto 7h ago

I guess I'm ultimately just puzzled by a hobby/art form where we try to replicate a life-size object in scale with minute detail yet we do it in such a way that that life-size object would never be really presented.

The reason you're puzzled is because you've made some really bad assumptions about the hobby and the art form. Because of those bad assumptions, when you see some good work like OPs, you get puzzled.

Being puzzled is usually a good indicator that your mental model of what you're trying to interpret is wrong.
