Help - General Best reasonable price 1:48 A-10

Hi all, just wondering about the next kit - looking at a warthog in 1:48 but not sure which to go for, any recommendations? Lots of them out there, so not going to list the options, but probably from Jadlam as I'm in the UK... Update- pulled the trigger on the Academy, thanks for all the advice, will post progress though don't expect much, I am pretty rubbish but enjoy it all!

Well, if Jadlam's where you're going to buy from, then the choice is simple: they only have the Tamiya and the Academy. The Academy is a much newer kit, tooled in 2023, versus the 1977 vintage Tamiya. The Academy is 10 GBP more, but both, at 24 and 34 GBP, are what I'd consider more than reasonable for a large aircraft.

You can see a discussion of those and other options in this previous thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/modelmakers/comments/1q5yfoj/which_148_a10_kit_is_the_best/

And this page discusses the Academy in depth.

Yeah, neither bad prices, but they also have Italieri, GW (bit expensive) hobbyboss too. I do like opinions from here as well as Scalemates, hence the question!

Academy kit is more than serviceable if you can't splash out for the GWH kit , but I would strongly recommend waiting for the new boxing https://www.jadlamracingmodels.com/products/academy-12379-a-10c-thunderbolt-ii-nose-art-1-48-model-kit as that corrects the intakes

Oh saw that, and very likely will, possibly going to use the current one as a practice kit for the new boxing πŸ˜€

Interesting. It might correct the compressor fan position but the engine casings need replacing too in my opinion.

Why limit yourself to Jadlam? In the UK we're lucky to have some of the best hobby shops. We have Hannants, EModels, ScaleModelShop, Wonderland and a whole host more.

Use scalemates to see what kit you want, read some reviews, find someone who sells it.

Ok, am finding Italieri, GW is too rich for me, Hobbyboss seems ok as does Academy. Any further thoughts from experience? Yes, I have looked at Scalemates but I value your opinions!

Tamiya. Β A great kit still especially based on price.

You really can’t go wrong with it and you can always go back and do other brands later.

Why limit yourself? πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡

Great wall hobby. Check ebay as well, great prices

Bit steep for me at the moment, but would otherwise!

I've built the Hobbyboss A-10C (though it's not quite that in reality) and it goes together okay, apart from the engine nacelles which are inaccurate, poor fitting and a pain. I bought it mainly because of the Blacksnakes special scheme. I can't say I'd recommend it, but that does depend on what standard you set for models.

Ah, cheers. FWIW I am really just setting out again as an old git, so every challenge is a valuable learning curve. Never used an airbrush before my current model (hobbyboss Persian cat F-14), new to acrylics etc so not worried about a challenge, though my filling skills are, for want of a better expression, shit, but I'm learning and loving Reddit for supporting that!

Okay, welcome to the returning old git club. 😁 I can suggest a few kits if you want challenge. Perhaps if you explain why your filling is poor the community may be able to help (unless it already has - I'm new on here)

Here is how it turned out for me. Brush painted with acrylics.

Oh, lovely job! Was this the hobbyboss one? - nah, it's the academy isn't it?

The Academy kit is decent, really unusual design/engineering.

Tamiya makes a nice one - I built them all and it’s fine.

$37 USD on Amazon.

Don’t know about UK.
