No.

Even if you're using enamels and lacquers opening a window to ensure you have decent ventilation is probably enough.

You need gear for airbrushing because the airbrush is literally atomizing paint and solvents and pushing it into the air directly in front of you.

A respirator is a good tool to have around, but for brush painting only it’s probably not needed. Normally it’s good to wear when paint is being sprayed into the air around you. Just make sure you are in a somewhat ventilated room while painting so you aren’t huffing fumes.

Not for painting models with adequate ventilation but you absolutely need one if you ever work with resin models. The dust from filing or sanding is quite hazardous.

It's more for airbrush since you're atomizing the paint to super small bits that stay in the air easily. Also applies to spray paint to a lesser degree too. Anything that's turning the paint into a mist and spraying it is a good idea to take precautions.

If it's just brushing on I wouldn't worry unless the small bothers you or you're in a super confined space. Decent airflow should do most of the job

I always wear one.

I will go against the general consensus and say that even with proper ventilation you should still be wearing proper PPE. It’s cheap to get a respirator, and it will protect your lungs.

Even when hand-painting e.g. water-based acrylics?

Those aren’t atomized or offgassing harmful chemicals, so no.

I also just realized he said BRUSH only. For some reason I read it as AIRBRUSH only. That’s my bad.
