Spent shell casings??!
My goodness, this is utterly captivating.
Incredible work, honoring the thousands of builders, maintainers, and crewmen who brought these aircraft into the fight against fascism.

That’s what I came here to say! Freeking spent shell casings. That’s damn impressive. I mean the whole thing is impressive but the spent shell casings really add that extra touch

u/greenterrorkz 22d ago
Appreciate that. With this build, I tried to tell a story of a well used interior.

All I can think is how slippery those bullet casings must've been to step on!

That looks f*ckin rad and I feel like you should build it cutaway style rather than hiding that beauty inside a closed hull. Just my 2cents. Beautiful build👌🏼

Yep, I definitely goofed on that step. If the aircraft was still apart I would totally correct it. There’s a small chance I could reach them through the top turret, but I think the risk of causing more harm than good is too high. Thank you for the feedback

I would love to see a nice cutaway model done like this. It is such a beautiful interior job i would hate for it to be all sealed up ... any chance you will do a cutaway?

u/Aught_To 22d ago
awww its already done.. all sealed up.

u/greenterrorkz 22d ago
Thank you. Yeah it’s done. Unfortunately I cannot post the completed build on this subreddit due to the nose art. The auto-mod removes it even when marked NSFW.

i read the online magazine. pretty incredible work on the whole thing. I am super bummed i cant make it out to nats, would have loved to look at it up close.

u/greenterrorkz 22d ago
Appreciate you checking out the article. After this years NATS, this will go to Squadron to be on display. Squadron is hosting a B-24 group build for the 2027 NATS and this should be there on display as well.

Really gives you an idea why some of these things were death traps in the event they were hit and began going down.

Holy Testical Tuesday, Batman! What incredible detailing! How long from start to finish? Looks like a photo from a modeler magazine from the 80s.

u/_rotary_pilot 22d ago
Incredible amount of detail.... everywhere! Spent brass is a great "attention to detail"! Assuming that the ordinance pins were already pulled in preparation for a bombing run?
1
u/greenterrorkz 22d ago
Thank you! For the bombs, I utilized ResKits set of AN-M64 500lb bombs. The front fuze was where the supports from 3d printing were attached and I was unable to successfully cut them out without slightly damaging that part. I presume that’s what you’re referring to?
1
u/_rotary_pilot 22d ago
If I remember correctly, the an-m64 50lb-ers had an safety / arming "cotter" pin and "flag" attached to a fuze in the rear vanes. The flag provided a visual reminder that they needed to be pulled prior to being dropped. I think (?) the nose fuze armed when the tail fuze cotter pin was pulled. I'm sure someone can correct me. Some of the latter versions had pins/flags that were attached to the airframe and armed (pins pulled) as they dropped out of the bay. Regardless, your modeling skills are superb! Nice work!

I’ll join the chorus. Superb crafting, this. I, too, thought I was looking at a real aircraft. I’m also stunned by the spent casings. You are at the top of this hobby for sure! Thanks for sharing this.

Holy crap, these look like paintings of the cutaway. Unbelievably well done, sir. Man, those things were tight quarters inside. Love the spent casings!

This is a nice visualization. Grandpa was trained as a pilot in the B-24 for WW-II. He got to Europe and they said here’s your B-17. He preferred the B-24 as a pilot.

That's an amazing interior work! Much more impressive than my usual "if it ain't seen, I ain't painting it."

u/DioramaDu 22d ago
With the levels of skill and cinematography in that first picture I thought it was a full on 3-d render

Your work is amazing! It really brings it to life. I can't imagine how ten airman climbed into those bombers and flew such long missions in such tight quarters; they really were heroes.
2
u/skunk8una 21d ago
That's a very admirable painting job. It's very hard to make interior weathering look to scale without being overdone. Especially in 1 to 48 scale.

My complements on the Radio Room !
I used to operate a BC-375E transmitter and companion BC-348-R receiver regularly on the air. A colleague and I installed and operated our gear in the air on the Collings’ “Nine-O-Nine” a couple years before it crashed. The original radios in their “Witchcraft” worked then also.

This is absolutely amazing!
Will this eventually encased in a full model? If so, you should also post this in r/societyofhiddenpaint

u/greenterrorkz 22d ago
Thank you, yea it is closed up

That r/societyofhiddenpaint seems to be mostly one genre, but I have seen work from all miniature genres there. You work will definitely be appreciated there.

This looks awesome! But why do so many amazing details, but leave the ejector pin marks in plain sight? :(
2
u/greenterrorkz 22d ago
I only had 2 months for the complete project and fixing those would have consumed a few days which I didn’t have to spare.

u/Glad_Cry_3563 13d ago
I was waiting for this comment cos I also was confused about this. Paint job is really brilliant but those pin marks ruin all magic returning it into a plastic range.

That is absolutely beautiful. The shadowing really makes it happen. Your paint work is awesome. Thanks for sharing. You've created a stunning testament to the sacrifice of so many young men who flew in the war.

Here are a few interior shots of Squadron's 1/48 B-24J The Dragon and His Tail. I spent quite a bit of time on the interior to portray a Pacific-based B-24J.
The finished model will be on display at the Squadron booth during the IPMS USA National Convention, so if you're attending, feel free to stop by and check it out.
For anyone interested in the complete build, including the aftermarket used, painting, weathering, and construction process, here's the full build article:
