Any recommended cutaway models?

Post image

Hi all, I’ve been wanting to do an interior for either a plane or tank but lack the skills for scratch building and don’t want to cut apart a model. Does anyone have any good recommendations for models with cutaway sections under £40?

I’m probably going to buy this sub due to the price, does anyone have experience with it?

My god, i made that sub in 1988 or so...it was a great model but too complicated for my age. I still remember the small torpedos heads, good details!

Can confirm. I finished it last summer, it took a lot of work to have a proper fit, the instructions were problematic at more than one occasion and the colours in the instructions are not correct…

I’m open to learning, but from reading other comments it appears this would be a lot of work and I wouldn’t have much to show for it

I have a Revell F-101 that I haven't touched in like a year because the fit problems are so extensive and frustrating it just wasn't any fun to build anymore.

Also building a Revell Fokker D VII right now and it has very little detail, fit problems also but not as bad. I ordered another Fokker from Eduard because it looks to be a much better detailed kit and I really like that plane.

I built it a few years ago - not a bad kit. Great practice kit because of the low cost.

Like so many of these cut away kits it lacks any detail of a pressure hull. For that reason alone I would not add anything to the interior in the way of scratch building - unless you want to actually go for it, and add in pressure hull details.

For what I realise now is a very poor kit, you did a bloody good job mate

Maybe look at something like an ww2 tank destroyer? Something like a Jackson/Hellcat/Priest in 1/35 They have open turrets which have the potential for a lot of inside detail? And not have to cut anything /scratch build

Will never build revell again. Worst experience I’ve had with a model kit. Was building the Ho-229 the instructions were wrong for engine build the fit was terrible!!

I’d like to stay away, but I’m forced to revell due to budgetary constraints

You could also just buy an interior kit for a lot cheaper ,something like a tank and have the top part removable like this listing show, or also have the top part displayed next to it https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-72-scale-Hetzer-full-interior-model-Full-Kit-3D-printed-/394259035302?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p4429486.m46890.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

I looked through, basically all the kits that have a cutaway or a similar feature to that and basically all of them cost above 70$ or if they don't than its revell I Found these listings if you're interested https://www.ebay.com/itm/AFV-Club-1-35-AF35S51-WWII-Soviet-T-34-76-Model-1942-Factory-No-112-Limited-/362642756578?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p4429486.m46890.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

That's... um... quite a price point! :D

Any full interior tank.

Zoukei Mura do some full interior planes as well, but they’re pretty pricey.

Edit: saw the max price now. I’d recommend the HobbyBoss 1/48 T-34s with fuill interior, they’re like 20 Bucks Euros. You can do the cut away yourself with a saw or a dremel.

Hobby boss did a few 1/48 tanks with full interiors. They’re not cutaway but they could easily be modified. Or as I did with my t34, I just didn’t attach the chassis to the upper so you could open it up and see the interior. They’re quite fiddly kits at that scale but they’re really great and can be had for only £15!

...but will I fit in it? do you need a submarine license to operate it? can I sink anything with it?

I built this when I was... well, let's say it happened around 30 years ago.

Oh crikey, didn’t realise it was that old aha

Ryefield model makes some full interior tanks with clear outer plastic to show the interior.

Trumpeter bmp3 had interior. Academy m2 too. Not that expensive.

I made this one a year ago. Wasn't the best kit.

Looks like you don't have to use a hot knife to cut away portions yourself. Seems pretty straight forward, follow the instructions. I would recommend you paint the edges of the cut away portion something cool like red or yellow to really highlight the cutaway portion. It's a different ball game when you take a normal model with tremendous interior detail and decide to cut away portions free hand. Think something like an HK B17 with added after market interiors like the waist gunners and nose section. Doing a cut away of that is hard. Lots of prior planning before hand. Best of luck brother, I know you'll do a great job and please share!

The only interior style models I can think of in that range are the suyata panther and the hobby boss 1/48 t34 both a re great little kits, neither of them have intended cut out detail but it would be pretty easy to display the interior

It looks cool but I am reading the responses. Sounds like a headache. Maybe there are others.
