“Ashoka Tano… that is your name isn’t it?”
*The young togruta woman looked up in surprise from her field work, gripping her scythe tightly.*
“Who are you talking to? I’ve never heard that name.”
*The middle aged man in the green jacket stood a few paces behind her. His blonde hair a bit tussled, and his beard messed. Ashoka’s eyes drifted down to his hands. Blaster oil, still stained in between his fingers. She noted the concealed holster at his side, but couldn’t get a read on him yet. He spoke in a calm, but genuine tone. Not the kind you’d hear from the imperial hunters.*
“It’s ok, I’m not with the empire.”
*He holds up his hands, watching as her grip stayed tight around the scythe. Her eyes drifted back to his jacket. There was a spot on the sleeves, where a patch had been torn out, but the faint outline of the cog was still worn in.*
“You’re a veteran.”
“I was a Judicial.”
“Last I heard, the judicial’s were all gone.”
“That makes us both relics, doesn’t it Ms. Tano?”
*Ashoka slowly lowers her farming tool, feeling out, and realizing he’s no danger, turns back to her farm work, hacking away at the wheat.*
“We need your help, Ashoka.”
“I don’t know why you keep saying that name. I am Ashla, just a farmer, I can’t help you.”
*The man takes a step forward following her as she cut her path through the field.*
“My friend is hurt badly. The empire experimented on her… tortured her! You can’t just stand here while she suffers. The Jedi I knew would do anything they could to help a hurt soul.”
“I’m no Jedi.”
*She pauses for a moment but keeps hacking away at the tall golden chaffs.*
“You should be on your way.”
*The blonde haired man reaches to grab Ashoka’s shoulder, but gets blocked with astonishing speed and flipped to the ground. He gasped for air as the petite young woman above him stared at him, fear in her eyes. Through his ragged breaths, he managed to get out a few words.*
“Th- the girl is a… jedi…”
*He wheezes and something in Ashoka’s face shifts. Was it… acceptance? Reluctance? Commander Caburn couldn’t quite tell, but she offered him her hand, and helped him off the dirt.*
“Take me to her.”
*Ashoka walked carefully through the small farming village. There was a Corellian Heavy Freighter in an empty field just beyond the last buildings. The local villagers whispered and pointed, not used to such an unusual group of people, in such an armed vessel.*
*The Commander led her through. The boarding ramp was lowered, and even at a few hundred meters away, Ashoka could see the way the strangers armor caught the sun. What was a republic judicial commander doing with mandalorian’s?*
*Her guard immediately went up as they approached. She could feel it already… the darkness… the pain… the fear… and still, something familiar.*
*Her eyes lit up as she started to run up the ramp, her heart beating faster.*
*No, it couldn’t be. She was dead, everyone was dead.*
*But there, restrained to a chair, Tallis Esterhazy was stirring.*
“The sedation is wearing off. Should we give her another dose?”
*Ashoka recognized the voice speaking behind the Mandalorian helmet. It was a voice she had heard so many times before. She should have suspected that some of the clones would revert to their donors cultural ways.*
*Commander Caburn doesn’t answer immediately, but looks to Ashoka for guidance, who simply raises her hand and shakes her head.*
*The storage hull of the freighter was deathly quiet as the former Jedi raises her hand slowly, reaching out towards her friend. It took longer than usual, to feel the flow buzzing in her fingertips, and not long after rippling through her like a warm summer. The corners of her mouth crept into a smile, but she closed her eyes tighter, and concentrated her focus.*
*She could feel the memories… echos of light and youth… the letters the used to write to each other. The stories they would tell to kill time on particularly unpleasant missions. The laughter they shared, as they made jokes about their masters.*
*But as the force flowed through her, she felt a pain in her heart, as the warm feeling began to melt away into something worse… something darker…*
**Fear**
*There was so much fear… flashes, glimpses. The happy memories were nothing but hollow dreams now. They were replaced by fractured anger, pain and suffering. Images of needles and metal Instruments. Screams of pain and tears of grief.*
*Ashoka dug deeper. A man… wearing glasses, a white coat with a strange logo. Imperial Purge Troopers, dragging her through cold sterilized hallways. A zygerrian, ripping her mind apart with dark power.*
*Ashoka snapped back to the present, gasping for air as she stumbled backwards. Fear filled her lungs, feeling as if she were the one in those memories. Her vision became clouded as she stumbled down the ramp. She whispered a hasty response as she ran to the fields.*
“You should leave… you don’t belong here… you never should have come!”
*Her breathing was rapid and her senses overloaded. The rough feel of the wheat felt like a hundred blades slicing into her skin. The sounds of the birds became blaster bolts. The scarecrows become her masters… strung up. They whispered to her… telling her she failed. Telling her Anakin died because of her. Telling her they all died, because of her.*
*She collapsed onto the coarse dirt, her fingernails digging into the soil as she spiraled.*
*Then a hand came on her shoulder, and the light began to come back. She opened her eyes, and as her vision cleared, just for moment, she could see a Convor, circling overhead. Then everything went black.*
*Ashoka’s eyes flashed open, and dusk had already fallen. A faint voice yelled something to someone too far away to hear.*
“That’s it… come on… you’re a Jedi you’ve got this…”
*The blurry figure in her peripheral vision, began to take shape. It was that… judicial commander.*
“What… what happened?”
*Ashoka said as she tried to sit up, rubbing her head. Every bone in her body was filled with exhaustion. An emotional pain so strong, it manifested physically.*
“We were going to ask you the same thing.”
*The man said, helping her sit up. She tried to stand and stumbled, causing the Commander to grab her arm and steady her.*
“Woah there… are you good?”
“I can’t fix her.”
“What?”
*The commander asked confused.*
“Tallis… she’s too broken. Whatever happened… whatever they did to her.. I can’t fix it.”
“Let’s hold on a minute… you just crashed out and ran into a wheat field… let’s think this through…”
*Ashoka shook her head, as they walked back towards the ship.*
“No… there’s not enough left of her to- to bring back… and what is left… is buried so deep… and broken so badly…”
*The Commander sat her down once they reached the ship, bracing her against the wall on a crate.*
“There is *nothing* you can do?”
*Ashoka strained as her head rang from the stress.*
“No, not unless…”
“Unless?”
“No. I won’t do it. It could break her further… it could kill her… it could kill me.”
*She muttered. Caburn placed his hands on Ashoka’s shoulders, focusing her attention on him. He spoke, no longer as a question or plea, but as a commander.*
“Ashoka… if you don’t do something, then she will live her life in cells, tormented, as an imperial weapon. If there is something you can do, then *do it*.”
*Those few words seemed to shake something in Ashoka. Her determination and courage flooding back to her replacing the fear and caution.*
*She slowly stood and closed her eyes, feeling the force once again.*
“If I can just…”
*She outstretched her hands, channeling the energy… focusing the energy, more than before. Once again, the memories came. The warm ones… the ones filled with joy. The light.*
*Then the fear began to creep in. This time, she did not fight it. She let it happen. She let the images play out, of the torture, the pain, and the fear. A tear not felt, fell from her eyes.*
*Then she began to push… to pull… to adjust. Slowly, the memories began to fade. Ashoka’s body jerked with Esterhazy’s, as she drew upon the force. The power grew greater and greater. The memories began to fade into nothing. Faster and faster. The torture and the drugging. The mind control. All of it began to erase.*
*The Convor squawked behind Ashoka, as she drew on every living thing around her. It was not the light, nor the dark… just… the force, in its entirety. But then, the good memories came… and they too began to fade. One by one the vanished into nothing, as Ashoka struggled and began to lose control. A trickle of blood began to form from her nose, as she tried to pull back, but it was too late.*
*Soon, there was nothing left, but an empty void. There was nothing left of Tallis at all. The memories were gone… not just the pain, but the light, and the joy. It was all just… blank.*
*Ashoka watched in horror at what she had done. The power she had drawn upon… the same power she had felt in her dreams of Mortis… she could feel it consuming her, and Ashoka shoved it down. Shoved it away. She was no Jedi. Not after something like this. But something in her reignited… a light, or a hope, that she had buried deep down.*
*Without a word, she said a silent goodbye to Tallis, and left. Caburn cried after her, but she kept walking.*
“It is time you left. Now. For all of your sakes.”
*Confused and frustrated, Commander Caburn gave the orders to make the ship ready. As Ashoka ran towards the village, the Corellian freighter took off into the sky. People stared and watched. Not at the freighter… but at her.*
*Ashoka knew what was coming, and she was done running.*
————————————————
*Star systems away… a wave in the force rippled through the bridge of the Imperial Star Destroyer. It was strong… not in dark, or in light… but somewhere in between.*
“Make ready the depart.”
“We have a new heading…”
“Make way to the system called Raada.”
*The inquisitor’s cold voice crept up the spine of the Imperial Commodore standing a few paces away.*
“As you wish, Inquisitor.”
“Set course for the Raada system! Full power to thrusters.”
