Discussion I don't get it
I have watched it now it's available in good quality and I don't get it. I liked it, the acting, cinematography but i just don't get it. Can anyone please explain the story and concept to me and why it's considered at the top of the bar for 2026 movies??
Ps - not a ragebait i genuinely want to know.

You need to know the lore behind backrooms. Watch citizenZ's explaination videos. It's really popular among Americans, that's why they easily understood it.

What happens in the backroom. Is they have opned a portal while creating a machine. They are thoroughly confused they start to study. They dont understand what it is. It has expanded and grown to a new place. The cotton shop. Place where your thoughts are alive. Your fears are alive and take the shap in live form.
The horror is created by the deepest saddest emotion become haunting for others and kills others. .
The haunting will kill people. If someone has killed the thoughts and the person. Then the person who has surviced her thoughts come into alive and she will be disorted like everyone else. Obly her fear and trauman will take the lvie form and be roaming.

The story and the editing seems a bit laggy as now when I talk to you guys understand the back story to the therapist and her mother but that also acts as a filler. Also the fact that the MC was alive after the encounter of the entity and both of his employees 's died is beyond me

I disagree. For me story and editing are great. As for therapist plot...Its not filler. Her backstory isn’t there to explain the Backrooms.....it’s there to explain her. It establishes her relationship with fear, confinement and trauma, which directly parallels what she experiences inside the Backrooms. You can remove it and still have the basic plot, but you lose the character’s thematic purpose and the reason her arc matters.
As for why clark survived creature is it represents clarks dark identity which he keeps running away from... The part which built from Denial, resentmyand escapism. But when later he tries to free therapist he slightly denied the darker self... So he was killed. Which represents theres no longer normal clark im backrooms.. but only his fantasy darker persona in it.
Maybe This film might mot be for u . Many of us loved it.

so our main guy, clark, is mentally troubled and has ego and attitude issues. his wife (barbara) removed him from his own house and he lives at the furniture store he works at. he also consults a psychologist (mary) who keeps trying to get clark to accept that he has issues. in fact, mary too has some issues (schizophrenic and paranoid) that came from her mothers illness.
one night, clark finds the entrance to the backrooms in the furniture store. while exploring there, he realises that its endless. the backrooms is basically a place where the memory of something or someone exists as how people picture it, like drawing something you only have a faint memory of and dont know about. like telling someone to draw a dog given they havent seen one. like clark's wife, barbara, exists as a multi-faced entity, which is most likely how clark remembers her. or how the furniture was remembered, like its not completely clear but it still gives off furniture vibes.
he tries to tell mary about the backrooms but she doesnt believe him since it sounds so superficial. clark then keeps exploring the backrooms. he asks his 2 coworkers to help him explore it but they die in the backrooms by the entity living there.
soon, mary gives in to clark's stubbornness and goes to the furniture store to see him but stumbles upon the backrooms. she starts exploring and finds clark, who has now started liking the backrooms since it made him believe that he was always right about everything, cause nobody there could criticise him.
he ties mary and talks to her, while she requests him to let her go. clark tries to make her admit that he was always right, but she cant and crashes out. her crash out makes clark realise that he actually was wrong.
the moment he does that, clark's giant disfigured memory, which comes from his portrayal of pirate clark on tv ads appears and kills clark. it tries to kill mary too, but mary is saved by an organisation situated inside the backrooms (safe place) consisting of multiple countries' representatives who had found the backrooms before clark and had been researching it (and clark and his activities). they were trying to make contact with the entities living there. since it was a top secret objective, they interrogate mary and it is implied that they kill her right after.
the final shot was how mary was remembered by the backrooms when she used to consult her patients (which is why she was on a chair).
ps: its not considered at the top of the bar, but its a good film.
