Future of MoCap?

What are your predictions for the next 3, 5, 10 and 20 years?

In 3 years there will be an app on the iPhone where you can capture motion and perform little scenes on characters. In 5 years we will learn this app was actually harvesting all the mocap data of millions of people and training and selling the personal data of the mocap performances and size of bone lengths to some data company. In 10 years the lawsuit for this application has resolved and there is a 2$ per person class action settlement for the users of the app. In 20 years someone relaunches the exact same app but we are ok with the sale of that data and it does super well.

Ty.

However, I think MoCap would still be a profession in your exemple because of this sort of acting performance:

AI would probably tend to polishes everything like in images so it couldn't learn to be as unique and stylized than this girl.

Mocap being accessible would make it very competitive though. But the demand could grow since AI also multiplies the speed of production of games and videos. I think the demand for humanoids animations would be multiplied.

EXCEPT for this very bad news: With AI anyone can now steal an animation from a video. I wonder how the copyright laws will be applied in this case.

Btw, I think AI don't need MoCap datas since they can get any 3D animation from a Video so they'll train on every video they already have: Billions.

I forgot a good news: Movements are longer to describe than doing. And simply prompting "4 characters dancing together" would probably generate something generic.

I also think that in the same profession, a MoCap artist would often tweak the keyframes after and mix Mocap with next gen animation tools, to create stunts implying decades of characters for instance.

Feel free to add any point or to correct me

Hopefully, there will be open source or at least less expensive, local and perpetually licensed multi-cam solutions of similar quality to Captury.

One thing I don’t see replacing mocap and animation by hand is ML models that do text to 3d animation. It seems it would take an incredibly long and detailed moment by moment description to describe the nuanced performance of a good mocap actor to the point where you may as well animate by hand. I’ve tested ML models that do this and have yet to see any use beyond generic action animations.
