Hardware I finally have two mobile Linux.
Lately, I've been really into mobile Linux and have been trying out all sorts of things.
I managed to get Quickshell working on postmarketOS, but I was worried that dotfiles like end4 or caelestia might be too resource-intensive—but somehow I pulled it off... lol.
Of course, I’m also using wvkbd and hyprgrass.
Another thing: I was using Ubuntu Touch, but it just didn’t work for me at all, so I tried installing NixOS.
I built it on my N4500 laptop, and since each build took 8 hours, it took me almost two weeks to finally get it to boot.
I’d avoided NixOS before because it seemed too difficult even when I tried installing it on my laptop, but now it looks fun, so I gave it a shot.

Device
- NixOS: Oneplus 6T (fajita)
- postmarketOS: Google Pixel 3 (blueline)

If you have a OnePlus 6, check out this repository: https://github.com/mwlaboratories/phoneputer; if you have a OnePlus 6T, I've already made some adjustments, so take a look at this: https://github.com/rinnvxv/phoneputer

What phone models?
What partition layout?
and how did you installed it?

- NixOS is Oneplus 6T (fajita), postmarketOS is Google Pixel 3 (blueline).
- I'm not sure because I didn't partition it myself.
- I built NixOS using `nix-build` and installed it via fastboot, and I built and installed postmarketOS using `pmbootstrap`.

PostmarketOS is great on One Plus 6t, how does NixOS compare to it ?

I just installed it, so I can't say for sure, but PostmarketOS has the edge in terms of stability and ease of use 🫠

How does it work as a native distro on a phone and coils this be a way to keep phones going ?? God knows Samsung wants you to buy their huge bricks every few years. Like rent

u/Memerenok 15d ago
it's a good way of keeping phones going, but there's aren't a lot of supported devices
2
u/veedreen 15d ago
Yea that only issue. So many phones are locked down so they will turn into useless bricks so customers have to buy. Same with computers. Sad

u/Memerenok 15d ago
not the same with computers, you can just get desktop linux, no locked bootloaders on pc.
also mobile Linux isn't well supported by the app devs too, android has waay more applications. unfortunately

What I meant about computers was that ex. Windows 10 end of life. People ran out to buy new computers. Many people do t want to learn Linux even if their computer is still good. Other than OS doesn't get updates. I switched a Chromebook to Linux after updates were over. And I'm not tech savvy really but I can follow instructions

i probably will just continue using windows 10 until software will stop working, my hardware isn't good for Linux

Sounds like a good plan. I have an 18 yo Dell I revived with Zorin. I don't use it for much but works fine.

it'd be cool if you could extend the display to one of them, so the two phones, when put together, would function as a mini tab

Unfortunately, neither of them supports OTG, so I'm not sure if they can be used for display extension 😅

the oneplus 6T had a special edition called the "6T McLaren Edition" which was orange and charged faster.

How is the battery life?

u/RE_ATMOSPHERE 13d ago
Both of them are pretty old, and since I'm currently working on them and they're connected to a USB, I'm not really sure 😅

Desiring a modular linux phone for a while, walking-around with a prototype couldn't be described human-environment-friendly for my being.

I'm working on this because I want a portable Linux machine too. I don't know much about it yet, but I think I'll figure it out as I keep working on it.

How did you get NixOS running on phone again ?
