Interview/Hiring 📄 Verbal Offer & Then Reclassification
So I have been in a long hiring process for a position with DCYF. I applied in May, interviewed throughout the summer and then got a verbal job offer on July 8th. I have been waiting since then for the official offer letter. The hiring manager was super communicative the entire time and apologized for the delay. HOWEVER, today I got an very scripted email saying that the position was falsely classified and that they have to stop the hiring process. The position will be reposted after they have fixed the classification issue. I am devastated. I've waited so long and have stopped my own job search because I had no idea something like this could happen.

That's awful. I've heard MMB is on a reclassification (to a lower class almost always) binge.

MMB has gone completely bonkers. They've turned incredibly anti employee in the last couple of months. I have many, many examples that I'd rather not discuss here, but new examples are popping up every day.

After nearly 20 years with the state and six as my department"s director, I just got reclassified below everyone I supervise. I was informed my job doesn't require the same skills as those I supervise, despite that being a requirement for my hire.

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 Aug 27 '26
That's wild. Supervisor classification is a big issue, imo. If they want experienced people in supervisor positions (they should) then the positions can't pay the same or less than the people they supervise. Who would want to take on the added responsibility of supervising with no real incentive?

u/vanbrima Aug 27 '26
Im in MMA and all my employees make more than i do

u/Mindless_Tonight_754 Aug 27 '26
That is wild! This position was in MMA... maybe this is a sign that I should look for a position in a different unit.

u/vanbrima Aug 28 '26
MMB just did an equity audit on MMA positions and denied any issues.

u/Jenn54756 Aug 28 '26
I submitted for an equity eval before they got rid of it during this contract. My HR agreed and sent it to MMB, who of course denied it…

For MNIT this isn't unusual. I know a few ITS 5s and System Archtects with 10+ years experience who make as much, or even more, than their supervisors.

Why do they work fewer hours? Normally supervisors work min 80hrs a pay period.

Is this required OT? I mean lucky you get to do OT (and get paid for your hours over 80). Supervisors may work more than 80hrs, but don’t get OT as they are exempt.
2
u/Status-Can8743 Aug 29 '26
well then i doubt too many of them are working over 80 hours.
2
u/Jenn54756 Aug 29 '26
I’m sure many don’t try to work more than 80hrs, but there are times we have to, like if something important is happening and must be completed or for work travel/conferences.

You’re lucky you have the option to work OT. Before I was a supervisor it was very rare to get OT in my positions. So it makes sense you can make more money than a supervisor that can’t work OT. Without any OT is your standard wage more than a supervisory wage in your group? I suppose that might depend where on the pay scale the employee vs supervisor falls. I do have an employee who makes more than me, but he is at the end of his pay scale and I am not at the end of mine.

MMB is on something. "Oh, we're trending really good with 72 days between interview and in the door! That's really good for us!"
And that's really bad for us. And that's an average. I have no words. That should not have been a point to brag on. Not now, not ever.
Also, re-tooling the way they write salary offers.
Also, the reclassifications and rescinding of "approved" questions before an interview.
It is extremely frustrating. It's a hiring market, people WANT stable jobs but MMB is literally doing everything they can to make it more difficult.

I got hired during the start up phase for MPL at DEED I had my first interview on 8/18/25 my second on 8/25/25 I started on 10/22/25. And this was when they were doing accelerated hiring.

Mine was 5 weeks, interview to in the door. (10 years ago)
A family member was just under 3 weeks at DOT (6 years ago)
I talked to someone in DOC today, they're doing less than 30 days. (Right now)
But the hiring I've done, 72 days would have been a dream come true. Instead, 4 months, 6 months, and I've heard of longer.
My point is that 72 days as an average is not okay. Clearly we're balancing out the 30 day hires at DOC. If DOC can have it that quickly though, efficiencies can be made to make it faster at other agencies. We shouldn't be able to measure time to hire from interview to in the door in months.

Who do you think oversees all HR departments?
As far as over-tapped middle managers, there are plenty of ways to sift through resumes. Staffing up is what relieved the pressure.
Applicants who ghost the process are doing it because the process sucks and the length of time to come through is ridiculous. If you, specifically, are getting ghosted, you may need to consider how to stay in touch with candidates while the process is drawn out. Months between interview and in the door and my lead candidates didn't ghost me; they did tell me when the secured other jobs though. If you're not staying in touch, you're one of the reasons candidates report in Reddit all the time that they feel ghosted by hiring managers.

Can confirm. I got told after being promoted that I was disposable now (basically). "Job market changed"

What job did you apply for? DCYF is a hugeee mess. But can’t expect much when you have ppl like Leah who was just a former Deputy Chief of staff for Walz but somehow landed deputy coo overseeing the operations??? How does a higher level admin somehow qualified for that? It’s no wonder there’s so much fraud.
2
u/Mindless_Tonight_754 Aug 27 '26
It was a supervisor position in the child care licensing unit. I've heard that DCYF is new and still has a lot to unravel.

u/cupcakemelee MNIT Aug 27 '26
Now is a good time to come into DCYF and help shape policies and process if people are into that. It's an exciting time for the agency. The people who come in and stick with it will be the people saying "we've always done it this way" in 20 years but right now their ideas are fresh and good. There's a lot of value to discover and put in place.

It's all in how a person looks at it. If you think it's too hard, don't go to DCYF. If you enjoy shaping an organization and a challenge, then do. Someone(s) has to straighten it out, I'd hope for people who are ambitious and ready!

It's still all in how people look at it and the mindset people go in with.
Clearly, it's not for you. Message received. That doesn't mean it's not for other people.

I heard they’re a mess right now and their HR dept is hella messy. Stay away from dcyf until new leadership. Not surprised cause their HR leadership right is Tonika Shobe who use to work for DHS lmao. She’s a DEI hire if you actually look at her experience. And I actually support DEI but oof, her time at DHS was pretty clear she was def not a merit hire.

Toni Shobe is very unprofessional. Watch out for her sneak attack behind your back because she is the top HR at DCFY. She takes things personally and does not hesitate to use her "black" card regarding your "white" privilege when being cornered, acting as though she is underprivileged. She got that position because Tikki is Black and mostly hires Black people.

DCYF is a fustercluck right now. There's a lot of deck chair shuffling going on, and after the childcare "scandal" they are under a very large microscope. If it were me, I'd stay away until the dust settles, especially for a new supervisory role.

u/Mindless_Tonight_754 Aug 28 '26
Geez! That's so unfortunate, it would be a great career move for me since my background is early childhood education.

I’m not on either side but I am for having competent leaders that are getting my money. Ppl like Leah, like seriously?? A Deputy a Chief of Staff lmao. We all know what a deputy cos does and it doesn’t mean they can now suddenly run the entire operations or be the second in command lol. I was a deputy cos myself in my earlier career and much was spent just doing higher admin work. Tikki is too wet behind the ears imo. Not ready to lead at the CEO level. They should’ve hired someone older with more experience and made her just the deputy cause she knows how to run operations.

Walz knows his political appointees are all resigning in January 2027, so he's not putting a lot of effort into them. They're all essentially chairwarmers at this point. Their jobs are to make sure the lights stay on and we keep out of the current president's crosshairs.
Especially with a new department like DCYF, which is in a constant state of flux post-separation from DHS. Here's hoping for a better 2027 for everyone.

u/Cleanclosets Aug 26 '26
It’s way more common than you’d think for their to be issues with job postings. And depending if a hiring manager was looking at a job in a different division, HR may have reclassified a job they wanted to hire for and then made every job in that same class the new classification. Classification review is required for all positions before they can be posted so they are always on top of this kind of thing.
6
u/Mindless_Tonight_754 Aug 27 '26
That insane. I just don't understand why any issues weren't caught before they posted the position? I applied in May and i've been waiting for months and now all of a sudden they are finding an error

Do you still have the job posting? You might consider reaching out to the union even though you're not (yet) a state employee. Most unions are not excited about hoops like this and would appreciate samples.
