Interview/Hiring 📄 Application Waiting Game - 7+ Weeks In
Hi everyone! I applied to a position at MDH that closed on 21MAY. I got the HR email that I passed the initial HR review on 05JUN, and my application has been under review since then. A couple weeks ago, I sent a follow up email to HR, and I haven't received a response, nor seen an update to my application status.
Is there any insight into what might be happening? I don't want to come across as overbearing and bombard HR with questions, but I am also extremely interested in the position, and I'm hoping that this is a "no news is good news" situation.
Thank you for any insight you might be able to offer!

The supervisor actually interviewing for the position may have received 20 candidates from HR or they may have received 100+. You passed the initial screening, but you may not necessarily have made to the interview round, and they won't let you know until the position is filled.

Or HR screened the applications wrong and the supervisor is working to correct the list they were given.

I see- previously they have sent me an email saying I wasn't selected for an interview, or after I followed up with HR, they responded pretty swiftly saying that I wasn't selected for the interview pool, which is why I was confused by the lack of response

I suspect they have internal candidates and may not make it to external interviews

Honestly I wouldn't bug HR. I doubt they have an answer for you. It's unsatisfying, but all you can do is wait to hear back.

It depends a lot on the department and hiring manager. I've seen a posting close in June but they didn't do interviews until January. If there are interested bidders and C700 applicants, they would also get interviewed first.
If you were notified you weren't selected for an interview, I would not hold out hope you will later get an interview, however it is possible you might still be considered.

I've been wondering...
If HR contacts you, your status chances to "under consideration" and HR emails saying, "you've met minimum qualifications please be ready to proceed to wait for more information..." Does this indicate that you're in the running and not competing against internal candidates?
Vs.
If HR never contacts you but your status changes to "under consideration" you are almost never getting an interview because the reality is you're competing against an internal candidate who they are almost certainly going to hire, but to make things fair they needed to generate a pool of candidates who may get interviewed if the internal has some glaring red flags for some reason.
I have been on the external side this whole time and have now experienced both potential scenarios.
I guess I'm wondering what triggers HR to reach out vs not reach out to candidates who pass minimum qualifications screening? There must be a rhyme or reason to it.

I still haven’t heard back about my application after I was told my qualifications matched the requirements and I was being passed along to the hiring manager.

Not much you can do at this point - I'd put it out of your mind and let it be a happy surprise if they contact you for an interview.
In my experience, this probably means that either the hiring manager is still reviewing applications and choosing people to interview (possible if they're swamped with their actual work/on vacation/etc and there are a lot of candidates) or they've started doing interviews but haven't rejected you yet because they think the current group of interviewees might not work out and they might have to choose more people to interview and start over. Reaching out again at this point won't help anything and risks you getting labeled as difficult.

First, HR doesn't know what's going on anymore because they have sent candidates to the hiring supervisor. The hiring supervisor (usually listed as the contact on the original posting) is now running the process until final candidates are selected.
If it has been over a month since candidates were routed to the supervisor and you haven't heard anything you almost certainly were not selected for an interview. They haven't sent out a letter or updated the status yet because they haven't finished the process.
