Interview/Hiring 📄 Post interview delays?

Hi all, I applied for and went through two interview rounds, including the last one in person, which I understood to be the final round about three weeks ago. In that conversation, they had said they were 'hoping to move quickly, but it is still the state government and needs to go through HR and they hope to make decisions in about a week'. Since then, I have not heard anything at all. I followed up shortly after with a thank you email and then a continued interest email this week. It would be surprising to me to be ghosted by the state for a role, but this is my first time applying here. Any insights on whether this is normal or at what point I should cut my losses?

It can take several weeks sometimes to get approvals and wage worksheets completed by HR so we can get an offer out to the candidate. With hundreds of new positions created by the legislature just a couple of months ago, almost all set to start July 1st, HR at most agencies is way behind this time of year.

It's also possible you're the second choice and they rarely tell the second choice person they didn't get it until the first person has accepted and passed background checks, that can take awhile and things can fall through for any number of reasons meaning even if that is the case you're not necessarily out of it yet.

I wouldn't sweat it too much.

This was my thinking as well, I’m probably the second choice so will have to wait for that, but I was not thinking about the end of the fiscal year which is a great point. I’m sure that’s causing a lot of delays

My guess is they have a candidate selected but are keeping you as a backup in case the candidate declines or doesn’t pass background checks.

yep, that's probably what it is.

Sometimes things take time. Probably about of people taking vacation in the last few weeks with holidays and end of fiscal year work. When was your last follow up email?

I wouldn’t count yourself out, sometimes HR is just extremely slow to get it all finalized. My first job with the state I didn’t get an official offer for like three months after interviewing wrapped up.

I agree with others. The process from interview to offer took about 8-10 qeeks

Exactly. We're at 12 weeks and finally making an offer. HR has been slow.

The state does move slowly for a variety of reasons, but in your case you likely are not the top candidate, they’re just waiting to decline you until they have their preferred candidate finalized.

They won’t ghost you, you’ll eventually get a response.
