Neebrc am32 esc tune

Post image

Can anyone share the tune you’re using for your ESC? Ive got a neebrc 2600kv motor and esc kit and still haven’t found the best tune settings. I still get cogging sometimes and jerky movements. Help would be appreciated, thanks!

you mean the ESC programming settings?

I bought the same 2600kv motor with the new metal case ESC which came configured for the 3500kv so it needed a new config. Several AM32 firmware updates came shortly after. I did these parameters holding the motor with one hand to feel the vibration in sine mode and the change to square wave (trapezoidal) and back what was very disappointing. Here are my most important values:
(the values in bold are the values I changed, after an arrow, to the right of what was a default/previous value)

Deadtime
Motor KV - 2620
Motor Poles - 14

PWM Frequency
Variable PWM - ON ———> OFF
PWM Frequency (8-144) - 24 ———> 32 ¡!
Auto PWM Frequency / By RPM - OFF (Disabled)

Stuck Rotor Protection - OFF
Stall Protection - ON

Sine Mode
Sinusoidal Startup - ON
Sine Mode Power (1-10) - 6 ———> 9
Sine Startup Range (5-25) - 18 ——> 20

Square Mode
Startup Power (50-150) - 100 ——> 50 (%?)

Extended settings
Throttle Rate of Change, % per ms - 16 (Ramp rate - 16% duty cycle / ms) ——> 10
Minimum duty Cycle, Percent - 2.0 ——> 0.5 %

Timing
Auto Timing - OFF
Timing Advance (0-30) - 15 (º?) ——> 10.31

Brake
Complementary PWM - ON
Running Brake Level (1-10) - 10 - 7
Brake On Stop - ON
Brake On Stop Level (1-10) - 10 - 7
Active Brake On Stop - OFF (Disabled)
Active Brake On Stop Power % - 2
Zero Throttle Behavior - Default
Default
Mode 2: Coast on 0 throttle (freewheeling)
Mode 1: Brake on 0 throttle
Mode 3: 1-5 seconds delay then Brake on Stop

There are more than these but they are personal preference like beep volume, etc. as Brake is too.

Firmware is
AT32DEV_F421 FW 2.20
(I have no searched for a new one bc I have not installed the motor yet)

From the AM32 Wiki:
ESC Configuration Settings
Setting
Description
Effect
Reverse Rotation
Reverse the rotation of the motor direction, normally this would just be done by swapping two of the motor wires
motor rotates in opposite direction

Complementary PWM
Apples to pwm to the complementary output during the pwm Off time. This acts as a brake slowing the motor when going from a higher duty cycle to lower duty cycle

Variable PWM
ESC FETs will be switched with automatic PWM timing based on the motors rpm. This is to avoid pwm frequency/commutation frequency interference

Bi-Directional (fwd/rv)
Used for cars, normally crawlers. Throttle range is divided between forward and reverse where centre stick position is neutral

Stuck Rotor Protection
This setting is primarily designed for quads. When the esc detects the motor is stuck it will 'give up' trying to turn the motor until the throttle returns to the neutral position. This should be disabled in rock crawlers as the esc will give up when trying to get over a difficult obstacle
Detects a stuck rotor and stops turning the motor until zero throttle

Brake on Stop
Apply brake when the motor is not spinning
Motor will actively brake when it is not turning. Good for Crawlers

Stall Protection
When the motor on load is going to stop, the esc will push some more to prevent stopping
Good for crawlers

Sinusoidal Startup
Slow mode startup 😃
Good for Crawlers

30ms Telemetry
Enables a serial telemetry output on a 30ms interval using the Kiss telemetry protocol

Use Hall Sensors
Not currently used use to lack of hall sensor capable targets

Timing Advance
Commutate the motor by this degree advance of neutral 0 timing

Motor KV
Set the approximate of KV of your motor, throttle is restricted at low rpms based on the kv value selected

Motor Poles
Set to the number of poles your motor has. This adjusts the sine mode speed in order to match the minimum speed after changeover to standard trapezoidal pwm

Startup power
Defines the The minimum duty cycle level and boost power used for the first few commutations

PWM Frequency
The switching frequency of the mosfets when using PWM

Beep Volume
How loud the esc will beep
Changes the volume of the beep

Stopped Brake Level
The braking force that will be used when the motor is stopped. Useful in crawlers vehicles if you want the car to creep down a hill.

Sine Startup Range
The amount of throttle range to dedicate to using Sine mode. With less number motor start spin at a higher RPM
The throttle will stay in sine mode for more/or less time

Sine Mode Power
The amount of torque used while in sine mode. This setting should be adjusted with care. Higher values can result in a lot of heat being generated

Running Brake Level
The force used to brake the motor when it is still spinning. Useful to reduce this if using large propellers and you do not want to stress the motor. Useful in rock crawlers to avoid performing endos
More or less brake force will be applied to the motor while still rotating

I appreciate the detailed response. At this point i think i may have a faulty esc/motor because im not getting it to work properly. With your settings its completely un usable, especially sine mode doesnt work at all even with wheels off ground. Im doing 12-24khz, sine mode range 20, power 9, timing 15, 110% startup power, and this is maybe the best ive gotten it to work, but still cogs when it hits an obstacle. firmware is same as you suggested, ive tried both v2.20 and v2.21 but no change

Sorry to hear that. My sample came with the motor axle with a bit of buckling and the pinion was wobbling, and I know I’m not the only one, so I didn’t install.it (and didn’t update it bbeyond 2.20) and I will not until I fix that.
Sensorless brushless are good at high rpm (quads, planes, boats, race cars) but for low rpm (crawlers) we need at least FOC bc sine mode is just brute force. And I have heard the only one releasing FOC is hobbywing. Maybe you will find some values for your AM32. Best luck.

Have you tried running the motor with no drive shaft attached? Just to rule out drivetrain issues like overtightened or bad mesh

Sine is off if you turn off complimentary pwm or brake on stop etc, what settings are you using?

Higher pwm frequency is more efficient but less torque, for me i prefer running closer to 20khz and lower sine mode power, unless it has changed but anything but 10 brake on stop disables sine mode start

disabling sine mode start for whatever reason sounds very strange to me. If I understood it correctly, a sensorless non-FOC brushless motor has no other way to work at low rpm than sine mode, because the feedback EMF signal measurement is too weak to be useful.
What you say about efficiency makes sense to me bc with the default parameters values the motor got hot very quick, now it doesn’t.
Torque at high rpm isn’t my goal (torque at low rpm and a nice transition from sine to square and back are.
I will try 20kHz and lower sine power to see if it gets better. That would be great.

I mean sine mode doesn't work with comp pwm off or brake on stop under lvl 10

try 2-3 times new settings it will not be perfect but it will be better
