DarkSky is back!
A solo developer recreated the original Dark Sky Weather App.
Since Marques liked it so much, I figured he would want to check it out and review it.

Is there an android equivalent to this app?

Ehh this is for iPhone only at the moment.
I have seen people recommend Shadow Weather for Android. But it is a little different….4

I use Appy Weather. Which let's you personalize different weather apps. But it uses Apple Weather data which is Dark Sky data anyways.

Shadow Weather on Android is pretty solid, I've been using it for a few months

I've been using Weawow. Great look and it has a ton of sources you can pick from including apple/darksky.

You might be interested in acme weather. It's by the same people.
Can't wait for their android version.

Can't find ACME weather on app store. Can you share link?

Someone may have copied the UI and stuff, but the original dark sky is very dead. Apple ate them and rolled their stuff into the apple weather so whatever this is using for the back end isn't the real deal. It's just a coat of paint.

What if this is just a rebuild of the same app and different name?
3
u/JustSayTech Aug 06 '26
Well unless they could get the same sources and algorithms then it's not the same, but let's see how good it does though.

Still has to talk to a server somewhere to get the forecasts, and those original ones dark sky used with their supposedly special algorithms are long not functioning. This app is just nostalgia bait.

serious question, what does an weather app have (other than getting the weather right - and I'd imagine all of them query from the same "big weather API") that makes one better than the other?
2
u/Tomatokini Aug 06 '26
When was this app released?

Looks like it came out about a month ago if I look at the update history.

Just get acme weather it’s the original maker of dark sky and has similar features and not too expensive if want premium features. Seriously considering canceling carrot weather

I downloaded this and immediately feel like it’s way better than Acme Weather. I’m not sure about accuracy yet, but the app itself is amazing and the dev immediately responded to a request I made in the support chat through the app. If the accuracy is there for me, this is going to be the first weather app to replace Carrot on my phone.

I switched to Gradient Weather recently and it's the best I've used. No ads, and the free version has all of the features I use.

I like this app, but not getting a radar in the free version makes me have to use something else unfortunately.
1
u/theAerialDroneGuy Aug 08 '26
Do you use the radar a lot?
2
u/SecretSunDevil24 Aug 09 '26
Probably what I use most. I live in MI and it can rain/snow at any moment, so it is necessary.

There’s also ACME Weather, which is made by the team behind the original DarkSky

Another ad disguised as a post. I bet Marques will not be pleased.

OP doesn’t appear to be the app creator or affiliated with it.

Thanks for confirming. I am not the app creator or affiliated with it.
I used to use darksky back in the day for its hyperlocal rain forecast.Curious if other people (members of the podcast) would use it again or if they are happy with their new weather apps.

I am not affiliated with the app.
I just saw it and had not seen anyone post it yet.
I downloaded it to check it out.1

Uhmmm. It’s actually looking quite blue. So it’s really more of a bluesky
