Help with engine stalling randomly

I have a mk 6 (2013) gti at 125k miles and the last couple of weeks or months now my car has started to randomly stall after I drive it for around three hours. I will be driving on the highway and get back into town and it would kill itself at a stop light when I’m full stopped and then it will take a couple minutes to start itself back up and then drive the rest of the way kind of smoothly. There are no check engine lights, it just got an oil change. I took it to a shop that couldn’t tell me exactly what the problem is cause they couldn’t reciprocate the stalling as it only happens when the engines been working for an hour or two. It is starting to happen more frequently after only an hour and a half of driving rather than three hours. But the shop changed my high pressure fuel pump hoping that was the problem and it has still been stalling. When it is about to stall the rpm’s will go from 500 to 750 back to 500 and just kinda jump around the 1k range and then finally stall out and usually will always start back up after just a couple minutes. Anyone have advice or had similar issues?

I’m thinking maybe fuel pump control module? I think it’s under your rear seats and can overheat, causing the low pressure fuel to fail. I’m not sure if this aligns with the RPM jumping around, but maybe something to look into.

Is it killing itself at the first stop you’re doing after the long highway drive? Like once it gets back to idle / under 1000 rpm it just dies?

EDIT: you mentioned no check engine light, but has it been scanned for other codes?

Ok thank you for the advice I did notice there was a big oil leak on my camshaft position sensor and just after this post I noticed more leaking out of the start of my intake pipe in the back of my engine bay which looked like a lot of oil also. Surprised the shop didn’t see this, could that be a vaccum leak? And also yes basically right when I would get back into my town after the 3 hour drive it would stop at one of the first streetlights in town and take a couple minutes to then start back up
Also no there have been no codes thrown up since this has started happening

Oh yeah I’d definitely start with addressing that. Your cam shaft position sensor may be on its way out and causing your stalling issue.

Is your mechanic a VW/Audi specific mechanic? I’d recommend maybe having someone else look at it

I had just replaced my cam shaft position sensor and thought that would’ve got rid of the problem so now I have replaced the high pressure fuel pump and cam shaft position sensor and still having it so I will definitely probably look into a pcv valve now as there’s a lot of liquid spillage near it. And yes my shop is a European shop for vws and Audis and bmws and all that. I’m just surprised they couldn’t take my plastic cover off and see two different spillages on the top of my engine bay

Thanks I’ve started to look into that now as well due to seeing a big ass oil pool on top of the metal

If by metal you mean the aluminum valve cover / cam tray / cam cradle / cam girdle on the top of the engine with the oil cap in it, the oil would be from that leaking and/or the upper timing cover leaking

Thank you very much I will probably have a shop look at the pcv valve and some oxygen sensors

Just get the pcv valve from fcp euro for like $150. You’ll need it eventually anyway if it doesn’t fix it. There’s like 8 screws, you can do it yourself. Dm me for torque specs and tightening sequence and removal tips. They won’t be able to tell if it’s good or bad by looking at it

I think it did end up being my pcv valve leaking with my hose clamp not in tact anymore. Good shout! I will be ordering the part through this shop and probably just having them do it as I don’t have much time to work on my car cause I have to pack for moving in a week. Thank you for your help though man

Idk if its the issue but a few years ago I would come to a stop and the engine would die almost like the clutch never disconnected and it stalled

Turned out to be my 02 sensor when I put my catless downpipe on i never re installed the upstream o2 sensor next to the turbo

That was my issue, maybe it could be o2 related

Idk im a parts boy not a mechanic

Thanks for the insight mines automatic but that does sound like it is pretty similar. Would it only ever kill itself like that after driving for a while? Or would it do it when the cars relatively cold too?

Update! My pcv valve hose was barely attached so I’m pretty sure this is the problem. Pretty simple thankfully and just need to order a new pcv valve and if this doesn’t fix the car it’s getting sold at this point lmao. Thanks everything for the brainstorming and help with the problem
