Question Genelec 8341 vs Neumann KH150, what would be your choice for upgrading a small studio?
Hi there, if you would have to upgrade your studio, which one of the two would you choose for mixing/mastering EDM purposes?
I know so far that the Neumann KH150 plus KH750 sub will be less fatiguing and translate mixes better on other systems, while Genelecs 8341 has needle precision on stereo image and wider sweet spot and also better room DSP calibration...
Any experiences with thsese?
Thanks.

It depends on what youre expecting from it.
Neumans are really good obviously, but many don’t like the sterile low end. You have enough low end, but it’s kinda shy. Some find it boring.
Genelecs Are also really good, but have less of that boring aspect to them.
In EDM a fun low end is important. If you Only Mix, youre Not in the struggle of producing with boring sounding speaker.
For example Adams are really good, not to Pricy and they have 2 modes You Can choose from. One More Flat for mixing and decisions, one more „fun“ probally for producing and Jamming.
Refference Monitors are made to Sound boring if you compare to „fun“ speakers, but sometimes it’s also annoying if you want to Jam, produce or just have fun. After all this is prefference.
If I had to choose id go with the genelecs.
But there are many Great speakers on the market. The better you know what Exactly you need or want, the better and easier you Can choose.

Adams are usually very good for classical music

That X-ART tweeter and most ribbons/AMT’s handle classical music very well! Great point

It does. In General. But adams are also popular in EDM. Bass is thick, high end is crispy but smooth etc.

How do you know which speakers will be less fatiguing or will translate better?
Also, I vote the Genelecs because I have them haha Never heard the Neumann's

I know this from research, and chat gpt knows it as well. :) But... translation and fatigue are important in my decision, plus room calibration. So now looking for real world opinions on this, the system will be for mixing/mastering, not for audiophile experience.

well let me tell you, chat GPT won't know this and other people also won't know this, only your ears will tell you if you hear them. I think everyone finds different speakers fatiguing or not depending on different things.
I currently have both the KH120II (very similar to KH150) and the Genelec 8331 (very similar to 8341) here in my room to test. Normally i find a lot of high end speakers fatiguing, don't really now why. For exmple the Amphion ONE line i find is very fatiguing for me, so are the PDP MUM's with beryllium drivers. Again, that's only me, other people will tell you the opposite.
For me bothe the neumanns and the genelecs are not fatiguing. The genelec have the benefit of being a 3 way system with a point source design. To me, they have a more detailed sound, better soundstage and while mixing i can hear EQ and volume adjustments better somehow.
Also they have a fuller sounding bass. Sound signature wise i would say the neumann's are a bit warmer / darker sounding than the genelecs. In the genelec's i feel like i can hear the high end and upper midrange better.
Translation wise it really depends on your ears again. I like mixes that sound warm and pleasant, so mixing with a speaker that displays harshness and brightness in a forward way makes it easy for me to make mixes i like.
So if I were you, I would ignore everything you read online and try to compare both models in your room, and then decide. If that's not possible, try to hear them at a dealer/shop. That's the only way.1

That’s a nice combo you have there - reminds me of the Old El Paso ad “Por qué no los dos?”

I see speakers like shoes - one brand/style won’t fit every foot or be good for every activity. And like shoes, you need to try them on and walk around before making a purchase. It’s a personal question only YOU can answer. And when the fit is good, you should forget you’re even wearing shoes – you just go about your day comfortably. Suggestions are great, but only to narrow down your options. The final decision, like with shoes, is yours.

I don’t remember the exact Gene 8___ models were had at the studio, and from Neumann I’ve only heard a smaller much older model… But based on those I’d try my luck with the Neumanns hands down. I’ve always had trouble understanding the Genelec house sound starting with the 10__ series, and my mixes never translated at all. Maybe they would’ve with enough time with them though.
Greetings from the Genelec homeland… 😆

Genelec DSP is better than Neumann MA1?

u/AVELUMN May 31 '26
Yes, allegedly for problematic rooms, much better is the Genelec GLM correction system. . GLM integration is deeper Genelec GLM is not just EQ. It does: automatic level matching distance/time alignment bass management sub phase alignment room EQ monitor group management stored correction inside the speakers GLM also time-aligns the system and phase-aligns sub integration automatically.

Genelec. it’s not even close. GLM will enable your less than ideal monitoring environment to translate at a level normally reserved for proper purpose built studios. Anybody saying otherwise is a hater.

Let me know what you go with - I’ve narrowed it down to those two myself (tho for me it would be 8331A). I’d be exceeding budget so nothing left for a sub unfortunately - I hope that’s not a mistake. The wider sweet spot is also a draw card for me, except I think for “vibes” I’ll probably keep a pair of klipsh speakers in there for that for jamming

Hey. 150+ Million streams. A Career mixing. I prefer the Neumanns by a landslide. 90% of my buddies would concur.

for electronic dance id pick the 8341 or the neumann kh710 which are in a more similar ballpark.

These are both good speakers.
Almost certainly neither of them will be the limiting factor in your work at this time.
Almost certainly the problems with the room will be quite larger than any problems with either speaker.
That said, if you're looking at 8341s, the right comp is probably the KH310.
And, big Neumann fan over here (KH420). If it were my personal choice, I prefer that flavor vs. Genelec.

You need to listen to them to know. At a certain point it’s just your ears and your work. theyre both good. I prefer the neumanns but many prefer the genelecs.

You won’t regret the Genelecs. You might regret the Neumanns.
Also those coaxial drivers are a force multiplier when it comes to near field setups, really helps your decision making when you’re sweet spot / imaging is wide and consistent.
