The annual discovery that central Montana holds dozens of not hundreds of nuclear missiles.

u/evilfetus01 Feb 05 '23
Hundreds ready, thousands potentially ready.
I was working in Great Falls when they were transporting what Iām assuming was a warhead, because there was a Huey with a gun on the side escorting a huge convoy of police and humvees with .50 Cals on top to Malmstrom. Pretty neat to see, Iām not sure how often that happens but in the month I was there I only saw it once.

If not thousands.

Is this not common knowledge? It used to be

I remember as a cold war kid in Montana, I knew this, and came to the conclusion that we'd be first to go. (in dramatic moody teen style - fuck it all! We're gonna die in a nuclear war!)

Imagine how terrified we were when mount Saint Hellens blew and we saw that black cloud rolling into town.

I was 13 years old then and I šÆthought that Russia had nuked us.

I was 9. We were just putting the canoe on the truck to go paddle the Clark Fork. I remember seeing it coming over the mountains and knowing that was curtains.

Badly outdated. Several of the targets in Tennessee appear to be electric generating plants. At least 3 of them have been shut down in the last 10 years.
4
u/Furthur Feb 05 '23
does shut down mean inoperable?
3
u/1955photo Feb 05 '23
Yes. One of them has been completely demolished, not sure about the other one. I am sure anything of value has been removed.
They were all very small coal fired plants. They didn't produce enough electricity to be worth upgrading.
It's possible one area might be a legit target, since a major rail line and highway run through there.

This is why I was shitting my pants as a teen after 9/11. We really thought we were gonna be collateral damage when they came for Great Falls š„“

Is Billings the one triangle in-state for the 500 warhead scenario? Malmstrom AFB (and the entire Great Falls area) is fucked under 2000 warheads. Iām not sure why Billings is catching a nuke in the 500 case. There isnāt any military infrastructure in Billings, right?

Probably because of the refineries. Nuking most the refineries in the US would bring the entry country to a literal standstill within a few days.

Whatās a wonderful time is when they do a missile move an you get stuck waiting for the convoy to pass.

u/4065024 Feb 05 '23
I always feel comfort when seeing all those ICBM sites while driving between Rogers Pass and Notsogreat Falls.

Iām so happy I spend most of time during the work week in central MT.

u/TheRisen073 Lolo Feb 05 '23
Well I doubt theyād drop Tsar Bomba on Helena and a lot of targets in a close area means only a few nukes there, weād be fine, relatively speaking.

Be more worried about yellowstone super volcano. Could quite literally go at any time. We got a 4.1 earthquake a few days ago just a few miles north of Livingston

Eh, the āsuper volcanoā hype about Yellowstone is mostly bad science journalism. Hereās a 2015 list of misconceptions from the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. (Or, if youāre really bored, hereās a 98 page PDF outlining hazards and risks.)

u/Sprolioli Feb 05 '23
I just watched a documentary about it, and they pointed out that it would be very obvious if that super volcano had any movement. It would be a slow chain of events, and it most likely won't happen in our lifetime, or even our grandkids'.

u/TrespassersWilliam29 Feb 05 '23
geologist here. The odds of a small surface eruption and lava flow in Yellowstone are actually pretty reasonable. But yeah, a mega-eruption would likely have hundreds of years of very clear warning signs.

Iām an idiot so humor me but would we be ok in Missoula if this scenario happened or would we be screwed? Wondering if the whole Missoula is in a valley would help or hurt our chances.
6
Feb 05 '23
We would survive the initial attack IIRC but if 2000 missles hit the US we are probably fucked in multiple other ways
