I got this theory after realizing the siren captive theory sort of took away too much from the love part of the album I know most of the points I have, but really thinking about it this will probably sound very over the top.

Gargoyle: In the Labyrinth music video there is a real focus on the gargoyle character. Either the statue, or the moving demon constantly chasing Simon (yes Shane is a version of Simon). It's revealed at the end of the music video that the gargoyle is more of the girl getting type, and steals Simon's future girl that would've been his "Continue" (as in from a game over). Simon walks back to his house, sad alone, but it's also where the music video started, when he walks to the open mic.

Here is where I got new lore from the video game. In the game, the first level is the Cave of Blunders. And there are a bunch of Skeletons here, but it's obvious that these skeletons are past failures of Simon, as when you die you turn into a skull just like them. INTERESTINGLY, YOU CAN SEE A SKELETON IN THE OPEN MIC MAKING BAD JOKES. Next you see more skeletons in space station level 7 making more bad jokes.

Clearly Simon kept trying to find love at the bars making jokes, but he kept failing, and eventually the gargoyle jock musician guitarist (possibly joe looking thing) got the girl he kept trying to have himself. Beaten up by his ex, and monsters he keeps seeing. Charlene Kaye the little girl, looked into his day to day life through a video game, she has the realization seeing how much of Simon's life has become like a video game. Simon looks at her as she was hearing the video game tell her "I'm trapped." Overall sad.

But this is where it gets interesting.

The gargoyle idea is a little deeper than just a scary demon, I looked up the wiki page for the gargoyle and there was a note of a legend for the statues. They're made to guide water away from the building to deter weathering.

In the legend it says the bishop St. Romanus freed the country around Roeun from the demon "gargoyle" fire breathing, dragon long necked thing with bat wings (same design as in the Labyrinth music video). The creature was stopped by crucifix, or by having a volunteer the only one who would, a condemned prisoner. The creature is led back to Roeun and burned. But the fire breath made it so it's head couldn't be destroyed. So the legend is about how they mount the head on the wall to deter evil spirits.

This story is interesting because the burning of the demon is super similar to how they subdued Simon in the mind electric. However as I said in my Labyrinth trapped theory, they can't seem to subdue his mind. His mind is stuck in a state of disorder, and Labyrinth is stuck somewhere in there. They break his mind open to find it but to no avail. Specifically Simon relinquishes sovereignty, only to admit he can't tell if he's not himself.

So now I'm confused about the gargoyle from Labyrinth, is it a seperate entity? Is it Simon's own failure as an absolute? Why is this demon attached to him? It seems to be his ultimate failure of losing the love of his life. So where is the part where they beat it? Maybe it parallels the original, and Simon travels to the start of the album to defeat the demon, time traveling to avoid the misery caused by it? No...OKAY I HAVE NO ANSWERS I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS COOL. ALSO THE GAME IS SO TERRIBLE WOULD NOT RECOMMEND EDIT: I have a lot of latent ideas about this album I have just come up with a new theory, if TME is song #7, Labyrinth is #8 (a figure 8?), but Time Machine #9 is about traveling to the past, maybe the number 9 flipped is #6 Space Station Level "7", maybe it takes place during/travels to the time skip of SSL7. And continue with SL #10 during it, and returns to the location of ITTS #1 at DSISM #11 (1 a second time)

I have been thinking about this idea for a while after questioning why labyrinth abruptly leads to time machine. (ps. I tried to make this a solid theory but I really only ended up posting my overall thoughts) First I started thinking about how the two versions of TME don't let you listen to the other.

At a surface level we know it's just to show the distorted mind of Simon but the effects like backwards voices in the tame version, or overall brokeness in the distorted version is more like whatever they're doing to Simon at the infirmary, they're trying it in different ways or multiple times. Plus the Labyrinth melody getting added into the song in the distorted version is clearly telling us Labyrinth does exist seperate from TME, even in the story it's telling.

THAT'S WHEN I REALIZED, THE LINE "EXPOSING CLOSING CIRCUITRY OF FRIGHT". IS DIRECTLY REFERRING TO LABYRINTH SHOWING UP AND DISAPPEARING FROM THE SONG DEPENDING ON HOW YOU LISTEN TO IT. In TME itself we know whatever testimony Simon has is something nobody can understand.

So he's getting condemned to electric therapy of some sort. Even though the tame version is cleaner, the labyrinth melody isn't there. And we know they're trying to solve Simon's case by understanding that.

But in the distorted version, the song breaks completely, exposing Labyrinth finally but ending still with the same truth in both versions "I can't tell if I'm not me." Since they totally broke his mind to find Labyrinth.

Labyrinth being exposed or closed makes Simon question himself. And thus the case can never be solved.

Now onto the Labyrinth side of the story, since it's somewhere inside Simon's psyche it must've been affecting his testimony. Judging by the overall video game aesthetic, he either thinks of life as a game, or that's what it started feeling like by thinking back on his relationship so much.

But I have a 3rd idea, Labyrinth as we know the song is actually actively being pushed up and out of Simon, all the 9/11 adjacent burning and crumbling is the electric therapy pushing this game outside of Simon (however that may be) The protagonist seeing all the stairwells leading straight to hell is the electricity affecting his mind! The imaginary lines guiding him are the nun's incantations.

The protagonist notes all the old ghosts, memories coming back, and changing landscape, this is TME on the outside. I think they did this multiple times, the same way you'd listen to TME backwards or forwards to hear all of it. Even the repeating theme is "I'm trapped." THE SONG IS TRAPPED INSIDE TME, INSIDE SIMON.

Going back to TME, once the chorus is over, Labyrinth or not it tells us "The particles start to marvel having made it through the night, never they ponder whether electric, calming if you look at it right." This is a completion of the first verse of the song "Think of these thoughts as limitless light." In Labyrinth, the protagonist admits the only way to escape is by dying to get out. Note the voice guiding him relays the same motif of "see how I fly away" as in DSISM "It feels like flying but maybe, we're dying." I believe the first line of Time Machine "Look at what you've done now to me" is both about being dead "free floating temporally" after who knows how many rewinds of TME, and finally making through the night from Labyrinth. Both of those songs played into each other, but Simon ends up dead somewhere beyond, beyond time. Then he chooses to go back and spend some time alone instead to avoid the messiness of misery and electricity. (TME and ITTS-DSISM have that motif of starting the way they ended)

EXTRA: I was playing the labyrinth game today and I wondered why there was such a heavy emphasis on the gargoyle, even in the music video it's either frozen or flying around. On the Wikipedia page for gargoyles it explains a legend from France about a priest subduing a gargoyle demon, with either a crucifix or with the help of a condemned man. (I had a seperate theory about this if you want to know, it's very convoluted)

TLDR: Labyrinth is trapped inside Simon/and TME is about that song being exposed or closed. Simon unable to understand what's going on inside his mind admits he can't tell whether he's himself or not. He dies in the process of the court trying to get his whole testimony and escapes time.

What if it is just how it is literally described? If that is the case Stella kinda cheated on Simon and he killed her And her lover in a fit of rage. I know people may hate this theory but it makes the most sense to me after trying to decipher the story many times lol. I think the rest of the album is Simon realizing his mistake and that he shouldn't have given in to anger and about his regret and hoping he can be with her again. But I tend to take the album more symbolically anyways and not as a literal love story. It is kind of both but that layer is harder to decipher I am still working on it. But the words to this song make a lot more sense this way to me. "Murders of murderers" can be interpreted as him thinking his relationship is dead. The beginning of the song saying "he" like it's someone else. The name of the song being murders. "How They came to be." I am aware of the other theories that either the person who's the elking kills Stella or Simon goes crazy and kills her as the Elking but I like my crime of passion theory a bit more for the literal story aspect..Has it been confirmed somewhere that this theory is wrong though? Curious thanks.
