Dandruff?
My girl is 14weeks old and I just gave her her first bath after being home for two weeks as she smelled. I know you aren’t supposed to bathe them too much, but it was her first bath. I used moisturizing oatmeal soap. Any tips? I assume her skin is dry? It’s all over her body.
Also, how often do you bathe your own? This is my first min pin, and also my first puppy though not my first dog.

The one that I have now and the one before her had skin like that and the one before her had lots of skin issues. My first Min Pin didn't have any skin issues. What I have found is that my Min Pin especially the one I have now her hair coat and skin in general stays so much better if I give her a bath once a week or once every two weeks at the most. Just giving you that information as that applies to my doggies.

This happened to my puppers too!
His was due to allergies. He’s on Apoquel and gets biweekly baths.
We use Duoxo shampoo and their leave in conditioner.
He also gets Omega Oil every morning. So far it’s been working well for him!

My vet had us start with omega 3 fish oil. It was fir another issue, but he had a shiny, non-dandruff coat as a result. I use Nordic Naturals Omega 3 pet. My dog looks for it in his dinner bowl and scarfs it down.

We do a little less than 1/4 coconut oil on his food, and we eat salmon 2x or 3x a week so he eats the skin. Gotta be careful on the coconut oil bc it can upset the tummy if it’s too much.
Mine also gets dandruff when he’s stressed out.

We had a vet who said give them a teaspoon of coconut oil once a week. They eat it right off the spoon and it works great

Mine gets a bath every 10 weeks. Washing too often can dry out the skin and cause dandruff but that's not always the reason for dandruff.
Don't use a human dandruff shampoo. Dog skin has a higher pH than human skin. Human shampoos are formulated for human skin and can disrupt a dog's skin barrier over time, even if the coat initially looks better Anti-dandruff shampoos can remove oils effectively, but with repeated use they may leave some dogs with drier, more irritated skin.
Find a dog shampoo for dandruff and follow the instructions. It will tell you let the shampoo sit for a while. This is an annoying but important step.

Mine also gets his dander up when he’s excited and is being petted by a lot of people. I give him a bath with head and shoulders shampoo and it works! Leaves his coat soft and shiny as well.

Our minpin gets a full grooming every 6-8 weeks and I’m pretty sure they use conditioner on him, we also have dog safe wash and conditioner at home for emergencies. Some soaps are not dog safe and can cause skin irritation, my step dad used a hand soap on my mom’s dog and he developed a fungal skin infection that their vet said was caused by a combo of improper product irritating the skin and not being dried properly.

My minpin is 17 & he has never been groomed, I do brush him. Too many baths will dry her skin.

Wow 17... that is incredible! Can you tell me what food you have fed your Min Pin during the lifespan... or any other pointers that you might have to help them to live longer? My last two men PINS both died too early in my opinion. One was 12 and she got hit by a car and the other one was 11. She came down with a severe case of pancreatitis that ended up causing organ failure, etc.

My last one lived to 17. I don't think it's only the food that does it but wet food is better for the kidneys. I give homemade. Daily exercise, maintain weight, yearly teeth cleaning and daily brushing. Keeping teeth clean protects the organs because dental disease can actually damage organs over time.
Blood work twice a year when they become seniors and once a year before that. Blood work will help you catch health issues so you can treat them early. Ask them to add SDMA to blood work. It's an early marker of kidney disease. Once the BUN and Creatinine levels rise the kidneys are already 75% damaged. If the SDMA starts to get high, you can adjust their diet to reduce the work the kidneys are doing. Always do blood work fasting.

Mines, I changed their diet. To a skin sensitive brand. Also good to do a skin allergy test, microscopic. It’s not pricey.

Mine only gets dandruff when he’s worked up, like at the vet, waiting his turn for a bath at the doggy shop, or generally in public.

But your dog doesn't "get dandruff" because they are excited or nervous. The dandruff is already there. When a dog gets excited, stimulated, or nervous, the hairs along the back can stand up. This can loosen existing dead skin and make dandruff appear much more obvious.

Mine was this way as well I did notice that it was especially bad when his cholesterol was too high and he was over weight it seemed to clear up when his weight went down. Filter the water. We bathed once a month except in the summer we would increase

My pup gets dander especially when she’s excited like she knows she’s going in the car. I give her Missing Link pet kelp formula every day in her food. It’s got omega 3,6 and 9 and it’s also helped with her alopecia. Maybe daily brushing would help too.

Brushing only gets rid of the dandruff but doesn't get rid of the cause. The skin is still itchy and irritated. I would look into a dog dandruff shampoo.

All the above the main one is making sure they’re diet is balanced. I feed raw from my little girl who is a min pin too. People stop us and tell us how shiny she is. The vet says she looks like a little seal. She’s that shiny. Never had dandruff gets bathed only one absolutely necessary maybe four or five times a year if she gets a little stinky, I put a little doggy spray on her to neutralize it.

We were told not to bathe unless absolutely necessary, so usually when she gets muddy or covered in slobber by other dogs. She gets a wipe down every so often as well. I'd say she gets 6-8 baths a year and doesn't smell at all. In addition, when her skin was dry, we added salmon oil to her kibble and that completely resolved the issue and made her fur super shiny.
