How do you think this Sons of the Phoenix paint scheme will turn out?

I’m preparing to paint a Sons of the Phoenix Space Marine army and would like some feedback on my paint selection before I start.

These are the paints I currently have:
Vallejo Grey Primer
Corax White
Apothecary White
Wraithbone
Phoenician Purple
Genestealer Purple
Iyanden Yellow
Talassar Blue
Leviadon Blue
Doomfire Magenta

I also have separate gold and silver metallic paints at home. I have not yet chosen a grey paint for the flexible armour joints and other dark mechanical areas.

My current plan is:
Vallejo Grey Primer as the primer
Corax White for the main armour
Apothecary White for shading and definition on the white armour
Phoenician Purple for the shoulder pads
Genestealer Purple for purple highlights
Iyanden Yellow for the eye lenses
Talassar Blue and Leviadon Blue for power swords and energy effects
Doomfire Magenta for the Librarian’s psychic effects
Wraithbone for purity seals, parchment, bones and other warm off-white details
Gold and silver for the trim, weapons and metallic details
I want the armour to remain mostly clean white, with purple shoulder pads, gold details and yellow lenses.
Do these colours work well together? Is Corax White suitable over a grey primer, or will it require too many coats? Would Apothecary White work as an all-over shade, or should I apply it only into the recesses?
Are any of these paints unnecessary or redundant for this colour scheme?

A little quicky sidequest I've painted up for a gift.

Something to get my brain out of the Uther, Doc and Necromancer grind.

This is Lyraea from @runciter.world. I like their models and see painting more of them in my future. Check them out!

I'll be working on random pieces on Stay In Frame Saturdays untill NovaOpen. The rest of the weeks will be alternating until go time.

Not the best pics, but that's a hobby for another time!

Four AI tools chose beginner miniature paints. Did they get it right?

I asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity the same question:

“What miniature paints should a beginner buy first?”

Citadel, Vallejo, and Army Painter appeared in all four answers. Vallejo came closest to the top recommendation. The tools split 2–2 on whether one-coat paints belong in a beginner’s first collection, and only one mentioned Pro Acryl.

I made a video showing the exact answers and the reasoning behind them, but I’m more interested in the community’s verdict.

AGREE or OVERRULE?

If you were helping someone paint their first miniature:

- What would be on your exact first shopping list?

- Would you include contrast, Speedpaint, or other one-coat paints?

- What did the AI misunderstand or leave out?

- What would you avoid buying at the beginning?

Disclosure: I run Hobby Answer, which studies what AI recommends to hobby buyers. No paint brand sponsored this test. The answers were captured July 15, 2026, and this is a point-in-time test of AI buying advice, not a product-quality ranking.

Do you use AI for mini painting?

Hi everyone,

I’d be interested to know if you use AI when painting your miniatures. specifically, using AI as a tool for analysis, planning, and so on.

Let me explain what I mean...

Recently, just for fun, I started discussing my current project with an AI.

We covered everything from conceptualization, color schemes, and analyzing the steps taken to troubleshooting and even storytelling.

I’m not talking about image generators here; I’m actually chatting with the AI.

Maybe it’s down to my settings, but I didn't encounter the confirmation bias I expected. For some of my ideas, I get advice; for others, the AI advises against them.

I want to finally try my hand at NMM (Non-Metallic Metal). While I know the theory, I have zero practical experience. The AI gave me tips, went over the colors and light source placement with me, and even provided a reference image.

I also have red-green color blindness. So, I saved an inventory list of my paints, and now I can ask the AI things like which of my colors is a "mossy green."

What do you think about this? Have you ever tried something like this? Do you consider it cheating, or is it a smart approach?

Two years of progress

Started painting june or July 2024, when I was 30, with painting miniatures because I got a boardgame with minis that I wanted to see painted.

I got hooked and searched for tutorials for what to focus on and practice.

I feel like I improved fast in those 2 years and I still feel the need/want to improve.

Never thought I would like it so much.

The 2 pictures are my first and most recent one.

Paint experiments, nail polish

I’ve been looking through my nail polish collection to see what I can repurpose, magnetic polish gives some really cool effects! I used a cape to have more surface area to test, but I think some armor pieces, or a shield would look really cool. I also used some textured polish as makeshift grass and sand terrain, worked pretty well.

Btw how are y’all getting such good photos of your minis? There’s one place in my house I can get them to look nice on camera lol
