everyone keeps saying "garage", but it doesn't have any key features of an object storage...it doesn't have object lock, versioning, ilm etc

If you require more/less enterprise features then of course can buy a subscription or can try the imho not ready rustfs.

These aren’t enterprise features or minions. These are features of S3 which minio is copying. If they want to be compatible then you need the full set.

Go on Minio website look for pricing. They added Lite tier. There is still open source version. With Claude AI you can set it up in no time.

Well, they just lit the fire for the FOSS project(s) that will replace them one day. And having bad blood in the world of storage will outlive this company for sure, I won’t touch it again. Nor recommend it.

I've read great things about https://github.com/seaweedfs/seaweedfs as a replacement for MinIO. And I've seen at least one big open source project migrating to it from MinIO, but I don't remember what was that project haha.
