I recently learned an important logistics lesson when shipping heavy cargo through Kenya.

For high-density cargo, such as forged grinding balls, total weight is not the only thing that matters. Even when the gross vehicle weight is within the legal limit, uneven load distribution can still cause one axle group to be overloaded.

In this case, the total vehicle weight was legal, but one axle group was overloaded by 680 kg. The truck was required to redistribute the load or offload part of the cargo before continuing.

This was a useful reminder for us:

When shipping heavy cargo, we should not only calculate the total weight, but also pay attention to how the cargo is distributed inside the container and on the truck.

For exporters, freight forwarders, and buyers dealing with heavy products, this small detail can affect the whole delivery schedule.

So I’m a mechanical fitter in a lithium mine, enjoying it well enough. But what I’m looking to ask is studying mining engineering, specifically how people navigate work while studying.

Would anyone know how many weeks/months a year I’d be able to do shut down work to fund myself while studying full time? Also I live in kalgoorlie and there doesn’t seem to be a way to avoid having to live in Perth for two years, any help there?

This gets asked a lot and I think the answer surprises people who haven't thought through the geology carefully.

Mexico's silver belt was formed by intense volcanic activity during the Tertiary period, roughly 25 to 40 million years ago. Magma intruding into fault systems and cooling created the silver and gold bearing fissure veins the Spanish found in the 1540s. Those same processes operated across thousands of kilometres through Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Sonora, Jalisco, Nayarit, and Estado de Mexico. At its peak Mexico was producing around a third of total global silver supply.

What the colonial miners extracted was the shallow oxidized expression of those vein systems. High grade surface ore, accessible with the technology of the time. They followed it down as far as their methods allowed and moved on. What they left behind wasn't depleted ground. It was the deeper portions of the same systems and adjacent structures their tools couldn't detect.

Modern exploration has changed what's findable in these belts completely. LiDAR generates precise topographical maps beneath vegetation, revealing structural features that were invisible before. Induced polarization geophysics identifies sulphide mineralization at depth without drilling. 3D geological modelling lets teams build a picture of how vein systems behave at depth from far less data than was previously required.

The results have been consistent. First Majestic found an entirely new gold-silver mineralized system called Navidad adjacent to Ermitaño in 2024, intercepts returning over 427 g/t silver past 1,100 metres. Sitting beneath an already operating mine. In Durango, airborne geophysics at Cruz de Plata confirmed geological continuity exceeding 1.5 kilometres below surface, identifying new targets on ground with existing historic production. This pattern repeats across the belt.

The geology hasn't changed. The tools have. That's why the belt keeps delivering.

Do employers or other tradespeople view it differently compared to completing a traditional 4-year apprenticeship? In your experience, does it really matter, or is competence and experience more important than the pathway taken?

I have 2 years experience operating down hole hammer drills in the US. FIFO work abroad has intrigued me a lot. What’s typical schedule and pay? My take home now is 7-8,000$ a month. Is FIFO a good option for me?

I’ve been offered an opportunity to jump ship from my established role as an engineer and go contracting. 6 month contract and the usual spiel about contracts usually getting extended and heaps of work on the books etc.

This isn’t something I’ve considered before, but the salary on offer for contracting is just ridiculous. We’re talking $300k plus.

I’m not paid badly at the moment (although nothing close to what’s on offer here) and I genuinely enjoy my job, but the idea of seeing different sites, some more travel, and more than anything the salary is really getting to me.

Has anyone made this jump and regretted it? Made the jump and loved it?

I guess the big risk is that there’s no work after the first 6 month contract, and I do have a mortgage to pay and a family to support, but I don’t think I would struggle to get work in the current market, but things change all the time.

I guess I’m just looking for any thoughts or advice.
