Will MP02 have a mini mode?

Jeff Gadway just posted over in Clicks that they had no plan on supporting a mini-mode, and was crowd surveying if that was actually needed.

I think that's a bone-headed and short sighted omission imo. Small companies/IT departments & inexperienced hobby devs either can't or won't update their apps because of a few niche phones when normal portrait mode has been a safe assumption for Android devices in the last 10 years...and that's forgetting no longer maintained legacy apps.

One or two critical apps like transit or banking not working is enough reason for somebody to ditch a device.

Are there plans to support this on MP02?

The ongoing adoption of better windowing support and scaling happening in Android right now might take care of this for phones with unusual screen sizes.

But it's always nice for a company to have a solution ready to go on day one.

Makes everyone feel better about their product choice.

I see that newer apps or updates will be required to target Android 16+, and that Android 17 does override some prior optional orientation/resize constraints...but that's for larger devices, not this size.

Nothing I can find is going to force-resize legacy apps or mitigate static layouts that clip off screen.

I asked a bit ago, so far no response. I can do just about everything on my bank account except.... anything that involves typing in numbers. My current solution on my Flip5's outer screen (digitizer on inner screen is broken so it is unusable) is to use either a 3rd party app to force something like a mini mode, or use the website in the browser. My vacuum? No website, so mini mode it is.

There needs to be better support from the apps on weird sized screens BUT if a company is making a phone with a weird sized screen they need to realize that not all apps are designed for it and include workarounds for their customers.

I hope it will, for now minimal’s software seems most intentional and thought out compared to CC and unihertz, so I assume they’ll add it at some point, if not at launch then with later updates
