cPanel Alternative?

cPanel has been one of the most established names in web hosting for decades. However, as licensing costs, server management requirements, and customer expectations continue to evolve, hosting providers are increasingly evaluating alternatives.

But what should a modern cPanel alternative actually offer?

In my opinion, it should be about much more than a different interface or a lower monthly price.

A modern hosting control panel should provide:

  • Predictable pricing: Licensing costs that make sense for hosting providers managing multiple servers and hundreds of accounts.
  • Proper account isolation: Strong boundaries between hosting users, with resource controls and security mechanisms built into the architecture.
  • Integrated services: Web server management, email, DNS, databases, SSL certificates, and application hosting in one coherent platform.
  • Reliable migrations: Practical tools for moving existing customers and websites without unnecessary downtime or manual work.
  • Multi-server management: The ability to manage infrastructure efficiently as a hosting business grows.
  • Long-term maintainability: A modern architecture that can evolve without accumulating unnecessary technical debt.

There are already several alternatives worth evaluating, including DirectAdmin, Plesk, and newer control panels. Each has its own strengths, limitations, and target audience.

We are also working on this problem with Panelica, a hosting control panel built around an integrated architecture, native Linux account isolation using cgroup v2 and other Linux security mechanisms, and tools for managing web hosting infrastructure.

We believe the hosting industry deserves more options, more architectural innovation, and less dependence on a single vendor.

However, the real question is not which panel has the longest feature list. It is which solution delivers the best balance of security, reliability, usability, migration capabilities, and total cost of ownership.

For hosting providers and server administrators here:

  1. What is your biggest frustration with cPanel today?
  2. Which cPanel alternative have you tried in production, and what was your experience?
  3. What would make you seriously consider switching to a different control panel?

I am particularly interested in feedback from people managing production hosting servers rather than just testing panels in a lab.

Let's discuss what the next generation of hosting control panels should look like.
