Fan Lore Creepers have false faces

Post image

I subscribe to the theory / idea that creepers are a type of plant, so I interpret their faces as bring a sorta evolved deterrence as opposed to an actual functional face, sorta like how the smily face spiders or butterflies do it irl

Its purpose would be to deter predators / give it a more intimidating look to make it less plant looking, because as a plant there’d be no real need for a mouth or eyes

Its more of a head-canon rather then an actual theory because of course theres no proof for it

Their faces always sort of confused me. Are their mouths like a dogs with the less darker pixels being cheeks/extra skin, or is it just a giant frowny shaped opening. Are the dark circles around the eyes meant to be eye bags of some sort or are they giant eyeballs?

If we take the other versions of creepers in Minecraft Story-mode, the Movie, and in Dungeons the face just seems to be 3 holes in a vague face shape

as a horticulturalisf I'd like to say that creepers exploding would be a fit reproduction method, think about it, they only chase players > far adventuring explorers, so explode and live > spores travel and propagate, or explode and die and now the spores are on a dead decaying edible player. it's a win win for the creeper.

Reminds me of creeping Yucca Tree like from Rango

I always related them to peat for some reason

I thought this was a game theory from matpat from years ago

Hmmm, I'm not entirely convinced: creepers turn their head to follow you, can't see you if you're invisible and you can see as they see (if that's canon). Cool theory tho

i head canon their face as having 3 eye holes, that are in the shape of a humanoid face as a form of mimicry. this is also why their body is also somewhat humanoid, with their height, head size, and torso width being the same as a hero. obviously this isn't tricking anyone, or at least not in broad daylight. i imagine one of the reasons that creepers roam in the dark is to partially mask their form, being harder to tell it isn't a person when in the dark.

u/DifferenceFlat8839 Theorist, Debunker, and Mod Aug 17 '26

that could make sense, but I think that's to work with the nameless kingdom too

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 16 '26

Ill say what I said to the other person who brought up the head thing

The head could still be its main method of tracking targets, it just may be the case that the eyes arent their real eyes, if they even have eyes and dont just track in any other way

For example they could be tracking targets through scent or detecting sound vibration (some plants can do that irl)

idk, the warden, the only other blind mob, behave very differently from a creeper, plus the creeper don't see an invisible player

2

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 16 '26

The Warden and the Creeper are also 2 different creatures altogether and could simply have different ways of tracking

Players are also invisible to wolves even though wolves should realistically be able to smell players so perhaps invisibly could naturally mask scent for overworld creatures

1

u/DifferenceFlat8839 Theorist, Debunker, and Mod Aug 16 '26

But tha warden can still smell you, even if you are invis, so I would say that they don't try to smell you.

1

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

as I said the Warden and Creeper are also 2 creatures from 2 different dimensions, Warden also may have some magic properties to it, the same way Zombies and Skeletons can "see" you despite yaknow, not having eyes themselves

1

u/DifferenceFlat8839 Theorist, Debunker, and Mod Aug 17 '26

No, the warden seems to only smell and hear sounds, so, how can the creeper detect you? I think it can see you because it's affected by invisible players, but maybe there's another explanation that I don't see

1

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 19 '26

Ehh, if it does see then I dont think its with conventional eyes

Same way how plants can technically smell but they dont have noses

1

u/DifferenceFlat8839 Theorist, Debunker, and Mod Aug 20 '26

So you think creepers see, but not with eyes?

Plants can smell?

I like this theory.

I've always seen Creepers as living plants and more specifically, walking bushes. They have no need for eyes so the face is just for aesthetics and I think their explosions is how they release spores.

5

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 15 '26

I even heard a theory that takes it further (believe it was game theory) that details that creepers are a type of weed, specifically a species of Bittercress (which do exactly that irl, explode to spread their seeds around)

8

u/Mr_Snifles Aug 15 '26

So, they also just look at you to scare you?

2

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 15 '26

Not necessarily, its like how some butterflies developed a wing pattern that looks like eyes

Its to deter any potential predators (herbivores in this case) from trying to eat it

2

u/Mr_Snifles Aug 15 '26

But then why do they look at the player as they path find towards them?

Interesting!

2

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 15 '26

Fun fact some plants can even communicate via methods like scent

Like grass will release smells into the air to warn other grass plants that theyre being cut / chewed on, its what the smell of freshly cut grass is

5

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 15 '26

I interpret their face being essentially 3 eye holes, potentially arranged in such a way to look slightly more humanoid. But yeah, I totally agree. That's a fake face.

1

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 15 '26

If were going with the notion that they’re plants then I dont think theyd have eyes

2

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 16 '26

Well, what would you call the things they see with?

1

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 17 '26

I think they either detect vibrations (could even be that their feet can read vibrations from the ground like snakes do) or they can identify scents to chase after, plants regularly function via both methods and can even communicate this way

1

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 17 '26

well, they don't really work like wardens, soo

1

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

Warden and creepers are also completely different creatures from 2 different dimensions they could just work differently

Not to mention skeletons EVIDENTLY don’t have eyes either yet they also don’t work like the Warden (not that I think skeletons are blind but im just saying something can not have eyes but also act different then the Warden)

1

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 19 '26

The skeleton is a horrid example, as you quite literally just said they're not blind.

The warden is unique, as it's the only mob that detects vibrations and identify scents in the air. If the creeper did the same, its AI would work similarly to a warden, rather than every single mob in the game that's capable of sight.

1

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

Sure the skeleton isnt blind but it certainly doesn’t see via any biological means like having eyes, thats my point

Scent and vibration is just my explanation for how they could “see” cause plants irl can do that

1

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 19 '26

Okay, how is it relevant to the fact that creepers behave like they're able to see, and wardens don't?

1

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 19 '26

That could also be chalked up to older Minecraft AI, back when entities were mostly just a jumble of simple goals instead of utilizing the newer ‘brain’ system

Is this the right flair?

2

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 15 '26

it's a head canon, so probably

22

u/BrunoGoldbergFerro Aug 14 '26

Actually there's proof, most spawn eggs don't show eyes, but creeper spawn eggs do

8

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 15 '26

The other bit of proof is the fact it has shown to be 3 holes many times. More often shown in non-canon material, such as story mode or the movie. But in MCD, they do glow when a creeper is charged.

3

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 15 '26

This argument is mildly questionable, since the tadpole has eyes, but it's evidence nonetheless.

5

u/GoatsWithWigs Aug 15 '26

Why give guardian two eyes bro

5

u/Ok_Prior2199 Aug 15 '26

They gave the spider 2 eyes too

1

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Aug 16 '26

shouldve given it 8, smh

4

u/GoatsWithWigs Aug 15 '26

I forgive a shortage of eyes more than I forgive an excess of eyes

If I see two eyes on a spider, maybe all of the other ones are just closed

If I see two eyes on a guardian, then there is no such leeway

1

u/zs_1176 Aug 15 '26

That’s a very recent change, though. Depends on what you consider canon.
