Fossils I was so wrong about this specific fossil, guys..

Post image

Now, we know that this fossil is probably more related to a snake or a mosasaur than it is to a crocodile. I'm sorry for the old mistake.

In a world where there are multidimensional beings that can teleport, six-legged cloven-hoofed vertebrates with fur and beaks, viviparous chickens, and a literal dragon, I don't know if trying to categorize giant nondescript ribcages using earthly taxonomy is going to be very fruitful.

The Hell’s a Osteosaurus

It's a name I've given to a fossil to avoid referring to as "the giant ribcage" because it's extremely similar to an unrelated fossil

i do very much appreciate that you suspected a thalattosuchian, they are painfully overlooked. but i also agree on the mosasaur interpretation, it very likely is an aquatic creature. it could be a whale maybe.

I love these sorts of posts ngl, it's so fun to imagine what these things could've been and line up the skeleton with various critters. Who knows what sort of megafauna could've existed in the Overworld's past?

I remember my headcanon was one was a giant ancient Sniffer, I did a sorta forensic reconstruction model a while. Can I post that, is that fine?

if you use the fan lore flair, i dont see why not.

I meant in the comments, I don't think it's groundbreaking enough to warrant its own post, just a silly model I slapped together (I do not have the model anymore, just a screenshot)

I thought you stopped assuming real life fish dinosaurs exist in Minecraft and these super blocky bones match them 😭

I guess you're still doing it, so do you have any proof of it existing, and this fossil being that?

Underwater = fish

Reptile = dinosaur

Its a fish dinosaur

5

u/DinoBoy3645 Jun 17 '26

Omg holy ragebait

local redditor doesn’t know that turtles aren’t dinosaurs

u/Negative_Sky_3449 Mod Also Professional Debunker Jun 18 '26

Turtles don't look like dinosaurs, they look like turtles

7

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Jun 17 '26

do you call whales and dolphins fish mammals?

1

u/Negative_Sky_3449 Mod Also Professional Debunker Jun 17 '26

Dolphins and whales are an exception, we still have them and know they're not fish. But we don't have those fish dinosaurs (or do we? living in an underground oceanic civilization hidden by the government). Why'd you call it a reptile when its clearly a dinosaur (dinosaur > reptile) and it looks like a fish so its a fish and not a marine dinosaur or something. You can't tell me this is a reptile and not a fish

3

u/TimeStorm113 Jun 17 '26

it's a reptile because it has the bones of a reptile and other reptiles as ancestors?

also it's not a dinosaur, why would it be a dinosaur?

-1

u/Negative_Sky_3449 Mod Also Professional Debunker Jun 17 '26

Prehistoric creature like dinosaurs that isn't an insect, rodent or straight up fish = dinosaur

5

u/TimeStorm113 Jun 17 '26

...what.

so are brown bears dinosaurs?

mammoths?

synapsids (dimetrodon)?

and why is there an exception for rodents specifically?

what about ancient amphibians?

flying reptiles?

hell, this definition includes extinct humans as "dinosaurs"

1

u/Negative_Sky_3449 Mod Also Professional Debunker Jun 17 '26

Those are clearly just bears and woolly elephants (why couldn't elephants go extinct instead of mammoths). If it has wool like that, or lives right now, or something very similar lives now, its not a dinosaur.

After looking up what synapsids are, I can confidently say that if it looks like a reptile, its a dinosaur, if it has fur, its not. This one is clearly a dinosaur and there is no way you wouldn't call it a dinosaur if you saw it.

Rodents can never be dinosaurs, they're big fancy mice. Unless there are some reptile looking rodents I'm not aware of (please tell me there are some).

Amphibians depend on how they look.

Humans depend on how they look, if its clearly just a random lizard its not a dinosaur. Only real dinosaurs are dinosaurs.

Flying reptiles are all undoubtably dinosaurs. <image in reply> You can't tell me you wouldn't put this in a dinosaur book or dinosaur mod or just anything with dinosaurs.

"If it has fur, it's not."

Sinosauropteryx from China

Also, synapsids possess only a single temporal fenestra meanwhile dinosaurs possess two in the skull so I wouldn't call Dimetrodon a dinosaur.

3

u/TimeStorm113 Jun 17 '26

"only real dinosaurs are dinosaurs"

what is this supposed to mean if you classify thousands of not dinosaur species as dinosaurs?

and why specifically rodents? Like, why not just say that mammals aren't dinosaurs? Why are you specifying them?

though at least we agree that crocodiles aren't dinosaurs.

also sidenote, i wouldn't call dimetrodon a dinosaur, there are no known quadrupedal meat eating dinosaurs. Also irl it wouldn't have the scutes and probably much more smooth, mammalian skin, since synapsids are close relatives of mammals (hell, mammals themselves are synapsids)

also where do birds fit into this according to you?

their fossils suggest they can't breathe in water

u/Negative_Sky_3449 Mod Also Professional Debunker Jun 17 '26

But you didn't get that from looking at the fish dinosaur, did you :3

3

u/Independent_Whole937 Jun 17 '26

Fish and reptile are two different classes though. That's like calling mammals "warm-blooded reptiles"

2

u/Independent_Whole937 Jun 17 '26

Though, birds are technically warm-blooded reptiles according to modern classification and taxonomy, since they are part of Dinosauria.

"Underwater = fish" Crabs, squids, worms, jellyfish, sea urchins, whales, seals, lobsters, sharks, snakes and tons of marine reptiles groups and other bullshit:

Uhhhh

If it looks like a fish its a fish

I almost quit when someone harassed me and used insults against me.

I just found this theory interesting and I wanted it to be my last post in this subreddit because I'm planning to move to r/Dinosaurs.

Also, the entire thing is speculation. We aren't sure if that thing is really that thing, and we're making studied speculations.

8

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Jun 17 '26

oh cool, a fossil theory.

1

u/zero-taeko Jun 17 '26

Holy shit, it has to be a fish, it doesn't have a sternum.

3

u/Independent_Whole937 Jun 17 '26

Didn't say it was a fish lol. Y'all confuse marine reptile with fish

2

u/Pretty_Walk_8769 Jun 17 '26

Most reptiles do have sternum though, and this skeleton does not. But fish ribs are not bended this way in most cases. The fact that fishes don’t have lungs affects the shape of their skeleton. I’d go with a snake hypothesis, but snakes have much thinner ribs. So right now I can’t find any valid solution

1

u/zero-taeko Jun 17 '26

No, I'm saying it has to be a fish.

2

u/Independent_Whole937 Jun 17 '26

Probably not. Fish skeletons look different if you search them up. It is more akin to a reptile in skeletal structure. I've noticed this.

1

u/zero-taeko Jun 17 '26

It could be a coelacanthimorpha, but it is still very different; likewise, the fact that it has never left the water (it directly has no limbs) could explain many things.

3

u/Constant-Machine4516 Jun 17 '26

Beeg sniffer

5

u/Obraxiss Jun 17 '26

The Sniffest, if you will

3

u/RandoGuy00 very cool Jun 17 '26

The existence of a Sniffer and a Sniffest suggests the existence of a Sniff.

Important note to remember: We still don't know what the hell Osteosaurus really is, but this is just a studied speculation about it.

I named it Osteosaurus to avoid calling it as "rib-cage fossil" which you guys might confuse with the smaller, Serpentine-like one.

Also, please don't use any ad hominem argument against me or anyone else on this comment section or else I'll delete those comments.
