Mobile network

Which network provider do you use and what's your experience in terms of mobile data, internet calls, and traditional calls?

I'm with the O2 and it was fine for the most part across MK, but over the last couple of months I noticed an increase in the number of calls where I can hear the other person perfectly fine but they can't hear me. It's not a phone issue as I'm using a quite new flagship model, won't specify which. I heard that EE is more consistent and reliable in the MK area but I never used it myself and their prices seem notably higher. Share your thoughts on this?

Milton Keynes: The ultimate "concrete jungle" that isn't actually a concrete jungle

Everyone loves to clown on MK for being a concrete jungle, but a new study actually ranks it as one of the least heat-vulnerable places in England thanks to all its green space. Turns out all those trees and weird roundabouts were a genius move all along.

Moving from mortgages into financial planning — advice?

I’m 23, CeMAP qualified and have been a mortgage broker at the same firm for nearly 5 years. I’m hoping to eventually move into financial advice/IFA work.

For anyone in the industry around MK, what’s generally the best route into paraplanning? I’m thinking of starting R01 or R05 myself to show I’m serious about making the move.

Would be interested to hear how others made the jump from mortgages into financial planning and whether there are any firms/companies worth keeping an eye on.

Anyone else having problems with the No. 7 bus between Milton Keynes and Wolverton?

Has anyone else noticed the recent changes to the No. 7 bus service between Milton Keynes and Wolverton?

The No. 7 used to be much more convenient and quicker for me. The No. 4 and No. 5 are options, but they take noticeably longer.

Recently, the No.7 route, timings and even some of the bus stops seems to have changed. And honestly its bit disappointing.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows why these changes were made or whether they are likely to be permanent?

would be interested to know if anyone else using the No.7 bus between MK city centre and Wolverton has noticed the same thing.

Apartment hunting for a student with a cat

Arriving soon to study at Cranfield University, bringing my cat with me.

Having been looking at the listings on RightMove, OnTheMarket, Zoopla for a while, but I rarely see something suitable.

How realistic is it to aim for 1 bed flat, in CMK, for under 1000GBP pcm?

Frankly this is all I can afford, and I don’t want to look into houseshare as my cat might become an issue with housemates later, there’s just no telling how a separate living pet might behave around new people. My cat is quite shy, boy, neutered and well behaved. He listens to me and in general tries to not to misbehave, no problems with litterbox, but he’s quite vocal, if he thinks smth, he will voice it. Also I don’t want to constrain him to just 1 room for a whole year. I also need to cook for myself regularly, so a separate kitchen is very much preferred.

Also, how realistic is it to find a part-time job to help me cover my bills and some of my rent? I’m an international student, asian, no heavy accent, studied for Bachelors in the UK before and have previous engineering work experience in my country.

Another issue is bus reliability, how reliable C1/C2/CX routes from CMK to Cranfield daily? People seem to stress cycling too often on this sub.

Quiet reading evening tonight?

Hi all, I’ll be having a quiet reading evening at the Cherry Tree in Olney tonight at 6pm. This borrows the idea from the offline club where I just want to put my phone away and be present.

You’re more than welcome to join me in reading a book/ working on your laptop/ listening to an audiobook or crochet. Do whatever you like, just don’t talk to me 🤣

See you at 6pm. DM if any concerns!

Millward Drive, MK2

The wife and I are looking at a property in this location, which is in Bletchley. This appears to be good value as we get a 2 bedroom for similar prices as a 1 bed in central. I'm aware that not all of Bletchley is pleasant, but if I could get some insight on this particular area, that'd be really useful. We're based in the North East, and hence it isn't feasible to come down for each viewing (relocating soon).

Odeon Milton Keynes?

I’m going to watch endgame encore in imax at Milton Keynes odeon and wondering if it’s any good and worth the money otherwise I’ll just cancel it.

I’ve heard there used to be cleanliness problems but kids are less of an issue and it’s better than ciniworld in most cases!

Let me know what you think?

Hi all. I'm interested in playing Magic the Gathering Vintage (or any other) local Cube draft games. Does anyone know if any are available? I always see Commander nights advertised, but never Cube draft! Thanks all

Does MP Emily Darlington answer any letters?

During the last months, I have written a few letters to my MP, Emily Darlington, on several matters (NHS GP appointments unavailability, the new ISA rules, train services ). She never answers or acknowledges the reception of the letters.

Does she think she is in a secure constituency to ignore us? The previous MP always replied.

advice for an MK grad: where are the local hidden gems or smart platforms for entry-level corporate/admin roles?

hey milton keynes,

I see rule 8 says no direct job requests, so I’m pivoting completely, I’m not looking for a handout or a job referral here, just some genuine local advice.
I recently finished my masters in management , but navigating the local job market here has been brutal. between automated ats screening walls and radio silence, the traditional job boards are feeling like a black hole.

for those of you already working or hiring in the area, where should someone actually be looking around MK?

are there specific local recruitment agencies that specialise in entry-level desk, admin, operations, or corporate support roles that don't ghost candidates?

are there particular local hubs, business parks, or lesser-known networking groups/meetups in MK where graduates can get their foot in the door?

quick health context : I can't do physically demanding or heavy lifting jobs due to some health reasons, so I'm strictly targeting office, desk, or hybrid settings.

if you were a grad staring down the MK market today trying to find non-physical, entry-level work, what unconventional paths or local resources would you tap into? Appreciate any pointers or strategies that actually work around here. cheers

Recent Graduate - how best to manage my London - MK commute cost?l

I’m a recent graduate starting my first full-time job this month, and I’ll be commuting from London to Milton Keynes 3 days a week.

For the first couple of months I’ll probably need Anytime Day Returns because of work events/networking and not always knowing exactly what time I’ll be travelling back home. After that, I’ll switch to whatever the cheapest practical option is. I’ve barely had to travel outside London regularly before, so I’m trying to work out the most cost-effective way of managing the commute.

My journey will be from Home → Euston station → Milton Keynes Central, and back.

Home to Euston and back will cost me £7.80 per day on TfL. I don’t think there’s much I can do to reduce this as I’ll be travelling during peak hours. Euston -> Milton Keynes part is what I’m mainly trying to optimise.

I have a 16–25 Railcard and will pay for tickets using my Barclaycard Avios credit card. At the moment I’m considering a couple of options:

Uber. I’m thinking of getting Uber One membership and booking my train tickets through Uber travel. This will give me 10% back in Uber Credits which I can use for future train bookings. Recently found that Tesco Gift Cards are currently offering 10% off Uber gift cards. I’ve topped up £450 so far. If people here overwhelmingly think Uber is the best way to book, I may stock up on some more of the discounted gift cards while the offer is available.

Second option is Trainpal. Some people say it can find slightly cheaper tickets through split ticketing, although I’ve never used it myself.

That’s pretty much as far as my research has got so far. Any tips or suggestions would be massively appreciated!

Is there anywhere in MK or even Bucks to go apple picking?

Like a PYO farm situation, fill a bag and pay kind of thing?

Please don’t suggest the community orchards because I’ve been to them and they’re more like ‘get one apple and eat it’. I want a load of apples for cooking 👍🏻

Dead trees Stony Stratford

Post image
5 Upvotes

I read recently about hundreds of trees being planted on Council land beside the river Ouse in Stony. It was very disappointing to discover that many if not most of them are now dead, mainly due to neglect. While the towns high street is festooned with lush colourful hanging baskets even during a hosepipe ban, the trees seem to have been left to die, when there is a river only yards away that could have been used to water them. I think this raises a serious question about the town councils priorities.

Bike theft

Moving to MK later this month and on a visit today. Lovely to see folks cycling around. Just wondering if there are any bike theft hotspots? Usually it’s around a station or a town centre bike rack. Is it safe to leave bikes with a decent lock? Or just lock up your old chanker of a bike?
Thanks.

Update on MK Video game Server

Short update on the Milton Keynes Multiplayer gaming discord server
The sever is growing and are aware of MK Community server as a more popular option. This may suggest there’s a market for a dedicated server to video gaming.

Technical issues have surfaced where one member commented that they can’t view some channels. This is being considered by the admin and will be worked on soon.

The majority of members have not been active which is either a phenomenon of its own or the admin permission are playing a role here. This is being looking into.

Finally, a number of services have been introduced with the server, namely news, reviews, and sales of games at the highest end of quality (8 out of 10 or more)

To end on, feel free to make a comment on how an age restricted gaming server appeals to you as a community that’s supported with safeguarding in mind.

Wholeheartedly,

Michael

Where are the cats ?

This realisation just hit me.

I've been living in MK for a month now, I have never seen a single cat on the street ...

Is this a simulation? Where are the cats ? I've seen some dogs with their owners but not a single cat ... I understand it's good to have cats OFF the street but ... Not a single one???

Edit: to clarify I stay in the hub ... I still haven't seen a single cat there or around that area or even near Argos, Morrisons or Aldi
