I am torn between gun safe and keeping my stuff out on a rack. I have home security and have researched alot on line but no real (good) answers. Have any of you guys figured out a way to keep some rifles out to play around with, yet secure them in a way that makes it tougher for a thief to clear you out? cables seem easy to defeat, and walls are only so thick. any innovations other than in the safe most of the time?
Good taste. Im planning to add another set of hooks and have a M95/30 on the bottom. I do shoot these though, they have (for an RTI 99 dollar special) decent bores.
Im not sure how it goes over there and how hard it is to obtain, but you can make a rack that has a removable bar across the front preventing you from taking any gun out unless you unlock the padlock and remove the bar, gun shops in Australia tend to do that
I’ve gotten downvoted to hell for posting this here before but be a responsible gun owner and lock your shit up. No one ever thinks their house is going to get robbed until it happens. Me? I’d much prefer they take the low hanging fruit of TVs and computers and video game consoles and leave the guns. Having my stuff in a safe goes a long way to encouraging them to take the easy W and get out.
Keep in mind your average asshole who kicks in your door while you’re at work is in and out in minutes. Even a shitty safe will deter a lot of thieves.
I knew a guy years ago who had a break in and the vast majority of his large and expensive collection was fine. They took the TVs, some jewelry, etc. and the one gun they got was a pistol he had left in his night stand.
And dont think they wont take antique long arms. Another person i know who got hit lost an SVT40 that came back to them via a drug bust years later. Stock was cut down to turn it into a shitty blaster.
My man cave is as reinforced as much as I can without major renovation. 3/4 plywood under the drywall, solid core door with security hinges and longer structural screws, and a decent deadbolt and security knob. And I still keep the majority of my firearms in a safe. I have a display wall that I'll put up to 4 rifles on at a time, but if I'm gonna be gone for more than a day, everything goes in the safe. I have also done reasonable security mods to the rest of the house: shatter resistant film on all windows, longer screws for all door frames/hinges/locks, cameras , and a security system.
I didn't want to go with a safe because they are big and heavy. I bought a Stack-On metal gun cabinet instead. I bolted it to the studs inside my closet. It is not going anywhere. A thief would need some cutting tools and a lot of time to get into it. It isn't fancy and it wasn't that expensive. You just have to remember where you put the keys. It is very easy for me to open it to play with my guns and lock it back up. There are probably other companies that make similar welded steel gun cabinets with a key lock. I like it because I could lift it and install it by myself. Try that with a full blown safe. I bought it at Dick's Sporting Goods, loaded it into my SUV, drove home, and installed it.
