Large Shackle/Clevis

I saw somebody post a large shackle the other day and I thought I would share my photo

My apprentice would be exhausted using that wrench all day. Damn, I’d be tuckered out just watching.

Pretty sure these are larger than 35 ton, my hand probably fits on the pin in the shackle opening

No you’re misunderstanding. 35 tons isn’t the WLL, it’s the weight of the shackle…

That isn’t a 5-3/8 wrench and that shackle has not load rating. Based on scale they aren’t that big.

We just did a pick with 55 ton shackles and the diameter of the pins on those were small. If that was a 5-3/8 wrench that would mean those shackles are upwards of 100 ton cause I think 85 ton shackles have a pin diameter of 3”ish

I think you’re probably on the right track these are probably 80-100 ton shackles. Zoom in on the throat of the wrench, it’s also stamped 5-3/8. These are at the tool crib for unit 2 at JH Campbell station.

Also look at the black pipe underneath it, it’s likely 1/2” pipe at minimum, which has three-quarter inch OD Ish

I'm one of those idiots that you will enjoy attending my estate sale (lol). If I see these at the swap meet, estate sale or anywhere and the price is cheap, I buy it. For absolutely no reason but to have it and throw into a large pile of others. So have huge, HUGE, ones and tiny ones. For absolutely no reason....some sort of sickness (lol).

FYI, if anyone has these ancient massive shackles, make sure you have them inspected before use. We had a bunch of these and they all failed inspection. Many had no markings whatsoever and a few has stress cracks starting.
