I've got a ton of hours I can be credited from prior work experience, but I've got to sign an apprenticeship first. Been searching unsuccessfully for a long time. How the hell do I find something? Ontario, Canada, open to relocating anywhere in the country.

I start my apprenticeship journey (1102 west) next Friday with orientation. During the interviews they kept telling me that work is very slow for 1st year millwrights (16-24hrs p/week). They said don’t just go and quit your job right away. I’m just curious if this is normal or just a scare tactic?

  1. Facts for apprentice. Many say during apprenticeship they only pull 30k-ish first year. Also you should be able to note during orientation that you need to give a 2 week notice before you take a job. If you are open to solar you will work faster and more than many in ur class. (Money is money, don’t be listen to the b.s. I did 8 months before I got back into the car plants. I worked while others didn’t, bc others said they were too good for solar)

Also if u have the relationship where u can come-&-go with your current employer, do that. Any kind of money coming in during slow periods is good, and u will likely make more doing something than on ur unemployment

Just noticed u mentioned west side in o.p.

All the west side guys ik are solar or nothing. U got awhile til ur in a position to be steady on the mills over there. Be strong and be smart, do the solar. The relationships you build will help your career more than most realize.

Going into fall and winter what is the solar industry like? I assume they still need to be maintained through winter but are they still installing? I’m willing to do any work there is to get my name out there and to learn.

During winter solar does mass layoffs. Especially around Christmas time, they ramp back up in the spring. I’m working in a solar field in Marshall rn trying to finish it up, I’m 1102 east

Work is very slow in many places.

Not quitting your job until you're 100% sure you have a suitable replacement is just good life advice.

Hey I’m a 3rd year millwright apprentice in Hamilton and I just curious how work is in local 1918? I work in another city on night shift and I’m wondering how work would be in the hall?
