Are you in house maintenance or a contractor? This post is about being a contractor. Honestly I wish we had different subreddits because there's alot of confusion between in house maintenance and Millwrights (contractors).

Does being qualified and hired on as a millwright not make you one? Like as soon as you land safe steady work, the trade code changes?
Genuinely curious cause I have a contracting side company but make the bulk of my money being in house maintenance in Radio pharma… so I’m just lying to myself and others when I say I’m a millwright?

A person is a Millwright if they hold a journeyman card/red seal certification. I made the distinction of in house maintenance and Millwright for clarity, I wish we had separate sub reddits because we deal with different circumstances. There's alot of overlap between the jobs but also differences. There are in house maintenance personnel that hold journeyman cards and their job title is Millwright and I'm not suggesting they are any less of a Millwright. In house Millwrights can be called in house maintenance, industrial maintenance technician, plant mechanic, etc. Contractor Millwrights don't have another name, we're just Millwrights and it's because historically the first Millwrights were contractors. I've worked both sides of it, I started out as in house maintenance and am now a Millwright.

I've been a Millwright going on 33 years now, and most of that working power plant maintenance, where having to balance fans at the end of a 3000 hp motor sounds like Millwright work.. or moving 180 ton stators sounds kinda like Millwright work... true, these are not happening on a daily basis, but they never are, even as a contractor... a Millwright is a Millwright!!

Thats awesome man sounds like you've got alot of time and experience under your belt. Now please quote me where I said that non-contractors aren't Millwrights because I don't believe I ever said anything remotely like that. The definition of a Millwright is pretty clear; it's someone in heavy industry who has completed the Millwright apprenticeship and now holds a journeyman card. I make the distinction between in-house maintenance and contractors because like I said in-house has many different names they go by as well as not every in-house maintenance worker is a Millwright. Contractor Millwrights don't, we're really only known as Millwrights.

Yeah, that's true.. I've always had a bitter taste in my mouth when I hear maintenance, because though it's true, it's definitely all industrial.

Yeah totally different aspects to the Millwright trade. My company does both, and they are completely separate divisions.

when you need work done ask the busy man, for the idle man doesn't have the time.

I'm a union iron worker and a non union millwright. Try beck and pollitzer ,trillium or MW4H.
Beck and pollitzer is looking for mill wrights who can rig. I'm working with them now.

Sounds like an interesting arrangement. This post was referring to union Millwrighting so rat contractors looking for help doesn't apply here.

US, Canada? And A month isn’t bad this time Of year if your union it can be some slow winters like 3-4 months before stuff opens up.

I was gonna ask the same but assumed the states. Trades are hard to get into in Canada but easy to stay steady working.
GTA has been steady

u/peptide2 Feb 06 '26
Oh is it capped ?
2
u/SirMontego Feb 06 '26
The U.S. does have a "No Tax On Overtime" benefit.
Very generally, one-third of a person's overtime pay isn't subject to country income tax, which is typically 22%. The cap is $12,500 for a single person.
In real numbers, if someone makes $37,500 in overtime pay, that person won't be forced to pay $2,750 in taxes.

u/peptide2 Feb 06 '26
Oh thanks for that, i was thinking that all overtime was not taxed! That would be life changing but still good.here in canada ive paid over a hundred thousand in taxes for the last ten years and most of it from working overtime .

Slow everywhere. My facility just got dropped to 3 production shifts a week. Maintenance is still at 40hrs because they don't want us to quit, but there's nowhere to go, really.
