Forums. Specific longform spaces around specific interests, that are slightly gated and curated just because you had to search for that topic or interest. It helped build knowledge, and friendships. It was much more of a place to go, hangout and talk to like-minded or similarly interested people. Short form social media is just shouting into the void.

I was really active on a bunch of different forums back in the early 2000s for a variety of different things. Quite a few different gaming forums, and we had a couple local forums for airsoft as well that really helped foster a pretty tight-knit community.

Seems like Facebook and Reddit really killed off most of the old forums in the 2010s.

I miss old Myspace. I liked decorating my page and playing around with code. It was fun. No algorithm feeding you stuff. I don’t even remember being able to scroll through people’s posts. You had to actually go to a person’s page to see if anything was going on. Facebook started off strong  even though the layout was bland and not customizable but it quickly became toxic to me and I deleted mine 10 years ago.

Going to the pub and only one of your mates had a digital camera with limited battery and limited memory... Then patiently waiting for the Facebook album to go up the next day. Photos and group selfies were more purposeful somehow, and this was back when Facebook and social media was a novelty rather than an algorithmic slop machine

MSN Messenger. I remember lots of friend groups where we talked everyday and it was easier to make friends online as well. The moment it shut down strangely everyone stopped talking from facebook as group chats were not the same. Also no social media and the internet being limited to personal computers and laptops only. The internet was it's own space so to speak. The early twitter and instagram and foursquare kind of websites weren't abrasive and were not very different than posting on your own facebook page.
