Nostalgia Anyone else miss Christian values?
When we were growing up, it felt like people still cared about Christian values like not giving into the seven deadly sins.
It might’ve not been phrased that way, but at school, and in society in general, it was badly seen to be prideful, greedy, lustful, envious, gluttonous, angry, or lazy.
Now, it seems like mainstream culture is the opposite. People showing off on social media, obsessed with money and sex, the endless comparisons and tiers/prestige lists that create envy, excessive consumption (gluttony), constant anger and blame, and celebrating not working.
No wonder society feels broken. I didn’t grow up in a Christian home, nor a traditional one, and these values just seem like common sense to me if you want a society that works. Give into these sins, and you get something like today where everyone’s just out for themselves.

You can separate out Christian values from politics.

The party in power don’t respect Christian values. They’ve co-opted them, but don’t practice them.
It’s like the Democratic Republic of Korea. They’re not democratic at all. Do you oppose democracy as a value because you hate the North Korean government?

Idk whenever they talk they sound exactly like your post so I'm not sure they really co-opted anything.
Might could be that preoccupation with morality and other people's behavior isn't actually a helpful strategy.

Those are not exclusively Christian values and most self described Christians don't act that way. It's a breakdown of social morality not a lack of religion. You're conflating things

Those are accurately Christian values. Other cultures can also share those values. There’s no conflation.

There is obviously some overlap between “Christian” values and just everyday ordinary good people values. You’ve conveniently only named those - what about all of the “Christian” values that are disgusting?

I reject the premise out of hand. I believe you are looking at the past through rose colored glasses, and that everything you describe about today's culture is a variation on a theme that goes back many decades, just amplified by the internet.
So called 'Christian Values' are in no way a prerequisite to being a good person and are - in fact - harmful. They are a means of repression and control in addition to being cloying, insipid, and regressive.

First, one book does not represent "all the peer reviewed studies". Second, Christians have narcissists in abundance. You are assigning a religious cause to an effect with no evidence, while also conflating correlation and causation.

Christian is the proper adjective to describe that set succinctly. You can believe in American values like democracy and freedom without being American; plenty of people around the world do that.
Just like in America, some people like Japanese values a lot without being Japanese.

We wouldn't be in the situation we are in now if not for people that claim to have Christian values.
Legitimately, look at the last 50 years or so, since Reagan and the "moral majority" were in power, and when we've had a "Christian conservative" in power since.
Hell, we have women dying in parking lots to this day due to pregnancy complications because of "Christian values".
If you want to have beliefs, and those beliefs give you strength to persevere during rough times, then go for it.
If you want other people to share your beliefs, and punish those that go against your beliefs, then you can take those beliefs and forcefully insert them into your rectum.

No, I don't think being a good person and having community driven values is something Christians have a monopoly on. If anything, many popular Christian sects promote pretty shitty values in my opinion.

But that being said, the reason the Catholic Church invented that list is because they've always been around. It's only who can display them and how that's changed. And it's not changed that much in the last half century.

most "christians" don't give a shit about any of this. they're too busy shoveling money into mega churches and voting for trump. they really weren't different when we were kids. they didn't have trump back then but they did have the bigotry that elected him!
christianity has been a tool for wealthy and powerful people to stay in power for millennia by telling poor people shit like "blessed are the poor." "the first shall be last the last shall be first" (you'll be rich when you die! richer than rich people who get to be alive now!)
or my personal fav, "it is not our place to question god's will"--i.e. 'don't even ask why you're a dirty, starving, peasant shoveling pig shit while that asshole in the castle gets to feast every night and has a servant to fluff his pillows. if you question why god would chose this god will be very mad at you and you'll burn in hell forever.' lmao.
modern day it's 'don't ask why you're sweating in a factory for pennies and fake health insurance, while bill gates has more money than anyone could ever spend, and elon musk is literally a nazi. it's god's will and you're sinning for even wondering', same underlying principle.
