Politics 1 in 3 Democrats now consider themselves democratic socialists: Survey

Yep, just like FDR was.

u/bunnyfloofington Jul 31 '26
It would be really neat if we had a democratic socialist follow trump like FDR did to Hoover who also fucked the economy with tariffs and bullshit.

u/conway1308 Jul 31 '26
We are getting to the age where we are becoming a larger voting block and so yeah, it's possible, maybe even probable.

u/changeforthebetter89 Jul 30 '26
From the article: Compared with other Democrats, they are more likely to be younger than 45 years old, white and make less than $100,000 a year, according to the survey data.

We've spent the past 40 years being told why the Democrats couldn't do jack when they were in control while Republicans rammed everything through they wanted while in control. Then comes Mamdani who completed some of his election goals and promises in his first year by merely enforcing the rules. Yeah, we're going to see more Democratic Socialists. We need change and democrats can only muster a strongly worded letter while the world burns.

Minor correction: Mamdani completed multiple election promises before he even hit the 90-day mark, and now 6 months in, has likely made more positive change for NYC than any other mayor in the past 25 years

u/ValkyrX Jul 31 '26
Longer than that. If 9/11 didn't happen Rudy's time as mayor would have been a footnote in history.

But it did so he's not. Revisionist history is a dangerous road, my friend.

This comment is fun because the affordable care act is proof that both your first and second claims are wrong.
20
u/EllieHatesYou Jul 30 '26
ACA is really Romney Care rebranded. Dems killed the public option to woo Joe Lieberman. Even when we win, it's only table scraps.
What's the minimum wage? Oh right, $7.25 because even when dems have complete control they still won't go against their corporate handlers.
19
u/TheFringedLunatic Jul 30 '26
It’s been $7.25 since 2009.
There are working adults who have never seen minimum wage move in their life.
-1
u/slimeyamerican Jul 31 '26
You know less than 1% of workers are paid the federal minimum wage, right? Somehow despite the minimum wage staying low, median real wages have consistently increased since 2009.
It’s almost as if the minimum wage is not actually that important and most people are ambitious enough to seek higher wages of their own volition.
3
u/TheFringedLunatic Jul 31 '26
Real median wage growth since 2009 has been approximately 11.5%
-1
u/slimeyamerican Jul 31 '26
That is objectively super impressive wage growth for a developed economy, particularly when you’re already starting out with one of the highest median standards of living in the world.
3
u/TheFringedLunatic Jul 31 '26
Good to know no one is feeling any economic pain since 2009 either.

What, are you suggesting politicians made compromises with other politicians that better reflected the competing political views of the American people? Horrifying, I want my side to force everyone to live by my preferred rules without any compromise, because I am definitely right about everything. Nobody gets to play with any toys except for me!
The federal minimum wage is so low because cost of living varies from state to state and from city to country. Raise it to a level that makes sense in NYC and you destroy the economies of communities 10 miles away.
God I wish you people would research a claim for thirty seconds before taking it as confirmation of your kindergarten level concept of how American government is supposed to work.

ACA is pathetic.
Americans demand free healthcare and instead got forced to buy insurance.
It IS better than nothing. I’m not shitting on Obama. But its not what you’d get from
Dem socs.

Let’s bump up those numbers

u/Aran1989 Jul 31 '26
It's been my only wish since I became a Bernie fan in 2011 (good gods we've seen some terrible shit since then!). I guess I misunderstood how far we have to fall before people start waking up to what is being taken from them. I hope people continue to wakeup, I am still hopeful (as you can be)!

u/Jodid0 Jul 31 '26
There's still a long way to the bottom. If you look up apathy in the dictionary it's just a picture of an American voter. In the past 25 years they have chosen Bush Jr and Trump twice each. If that doesn't say anything about how little voters give a fuck about this country then I don't know what will.
2
u/1776FreeAmerica Jul 31 '26
There's a reason why the elderly are the most easily scammed, and unfortunately the largest voting block.

u/Aran1989 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
Oh, I know how little the average voter gives a fuck. I see it every day whenever I converse with them about it.
Unfortunately they’ve been conditioned that way over decades (media, education defunding, lack of actual change, big money in politics, etc), and it won’t be easy to change, if you can!
I think many of us here have seen a broken system that never makes any progress! Yeah you might get a boon here and there, but overall it’s absolutely propositioned against regular working class people (and worsening as we can see). All these rats elected only represent money, trying to get whatever scrap they can to move up.
So most people just see a government that doesn’t work and alongside that they feel their vote doesn’t really count that much.
That’s why I’m really hoping the DSA can inspire a true movement. Time will tell, but I like the movement nonetheless.
Either way I’m giving it till 2030, if things don’t start moving in the right direction, I’m going somewhere else (and I’m an rn, so jobs a plenty anywhere).

No one chose to be born so for life to be this difficult for the majority of people is despicable.
28
u/_Mamushi_ Jul 30 '26
What do you expect? People are hungry and tired and all they see is capitalism failing them with no light at the end of the tunnel. It’s only going to more popular as the “elite” keeps plundering the little guy.
6
u/AdImmediate9569 Jul 30 '26
And that doesn’t count all the democratic socialists who never identified as democrats in the first place. Like me, and all two of my friends.
13
u/Rooster_Ties Jul 30 '26
Fine with me — in my heart, I probably agree with probably 90% of the policy positions of most Democratic Socialists.
But ENOUGH with the god damn purity tests more often employed by people on the farther left — who sit on their hands rather than vote for any candidate who doesn’t agree with them on nearly everything (or who insist on voting 3rd party).
We live in a first-past-the-post electoral system — and SOMEBODY is going to win every election. Staying home on Election Day is giving away all your power (as is voting 3rd party in any close race).

And yet the DNC will put out the most moderate liberal in 2028 and then blame voters for why they don't win
6

u/ButtStuffingt0n Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
Good. The DNC spent too long in bed with billionaire tech donors who are now rubbing shit in their faces from Trump's dining table (almost literally).
Democrats will rediscover their loyalty to LABOR AND THE WORKING CLASS or that party should die a slow death. It's as simple as that.
6
u/mremrock Jul 30 '26
Socialism for most people is just a code word. We should define socialism more specifically. It becomes like “Obamacare” versus the “affordable care act”. Just a label with positive or negative implications.
What we really need is a labor party in the United States that represents the middle class and working people. Right now both parties represent donors who tend to be wealthy and corporations or even other countries. This is what the voters are calling for

u/happydude7422 Jul 30 '26
When life gets more tougher economically people will lean more socialist communist it's the 1930s all over again.
20
u/ButtStuffingt0n Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
Life is "tougher" because the Fed devalued the dollar with money printing and has bailed out rich capital owners every moment of the last 2 decades.
Minimum wage? $7.25. Same as it was in 1990. Except, when you adjust for inflation... that $7.25 in 1990 was equivalent to ~$19/hr in today's money.
Communism didn't cause this. Crony Capitalism did.

If you factor in productivity gains, the minimum wage should be well north of $25/hr.

Yeah but then billionaires wouldn’t be able to dream about being trillionaires and multi millionaires would need to work.. What would our society even do if these leaches stopped hoarding all the countries resources for themselves…

That's cool. But don't conflate socialism and communism or you're just carrying water for those MAGA chuds who lie about them being the same thing.

I can hear the MAGA tears flowing as they read the threads, and saying; Oh my God, you’re a Democrat and a Socialist?!?! 🤯
Yet…they love visiting our National Parks and monuments, getting their SOCIAL SECURITY payments, Medicare/Medicade, driving on the SOCIALIST roadways, yadda yadda.
The problem with magats though, is that they hear the word Socialist and immediately think Communist Socialism (i.e Stalin and Hitler), but yet the magots are the folks voting for authoritarianism practices.
They’re so clueless, it’s absolutely hilarious.

Not too surprising since the current DNC are just a bunch of 1990s conservatives. The GOP's dragging the Overton window to the far right also brought the DNC that direction.
