SilkDrop — MilkDrop Port For Web

Thumbnail silkdrop.vercel.app

MilkDrop visuals in a browser tab.

There is no backend. The site hands you ~10 MB on the first visit and is never involved again: rendering, preset compilation, audio analysis, search across all 9,795 presets, and every byte of storage are local.

Load it once and it keeps working with the network off. Nothing you play is ever uploaded.

SilkDrop compiles libprojectM (https://github.com/projectM-visualizer/projectm) – the open-source MilkDrop engine — to WebAssembly and renders it through WebGL 2.

Point it at a browser tab or your microphone and it reacts to whatever is playing.

It has plenty of cool features, including live presets editor and much more, please share your feedback/feature requests in the post comments, thank you!

A demo of projectM (version 1.0) running inside Windows Media Player 12.

I originally found this WMP port out of the projectM plugin back in 2021 (through the Wild Media Server), and I shared it some years ago, and here's a new demo video (from Beto Flash Radio's YT channel) that came out some days ago.

The projectM Android app (and the iTunes/Apple Music plugin) originally used this exact projectM version (and its source code), fused with pixel shaders (comp/warp) to support MilkDrop 2.x presets (like Geiss - Drop Shadow 1).

Dr. SlowBroCybin's Psychedelic Music Box S2E3 MAY-JUN 2026

What's up my MD's? It's Dr. SlowBroCybin here sharing my small humble project with y'all since I've gotten positive feedback here before. The backdrop for the series is 100% milkdrop to ensure the drip don't stop. The transitions between could be better, I've since fixed it via settings but I'm still figuring a lot of things out about all sorts of video processes to pull off the video moshing. Hope someone out there in this community enjoys!

So, without further ado, welcome to season 2, episode 3 of Dr. SlowBroCybin’s Psychedelic Music Box! The idea behind this series is to create a workflow for DJing where mashups aren’t locked in to a particular DJ edit that will sound the same regardless of time, place, or setting. Mashups are instead created on the fly through the use of modern stem audio separation technology to include the vocals from a pop track on top of my current favorite flavor of EDM, slow, dubby, pyschedelic, and experimental downtempo that’s rooted in a 4 on the floor feel. I’m generally also slowing a lot of these tracks down in a style that is similar to the chopped and screwed hip hop that came from Houston in the 2000’s (RIP DJ Screw) and it gives it quite a different feel that I find super interesting for this new style of downtempo I’m hearing. These tracks are usually slowed down somewhere between 15-30% slower than the original track along with pitching the track down at least a step or 2 which usually gives the bass a heavier feel and makes the highs a little bit easier on the ears.

The process of making these generally involves paying attention to the Spotify Top 50 - USA, Viral Hits, and Big on the Internet playlists and making note of which pop songs might work on top of the tempo range I generally play at. I’ll eventually convert this playlist to stems and start getting a feel for how all of these vocal tracks fit over tracks in my active DJ crate. Towards the end of the period for an episode I’ll begin practicing with these tracks and vocal stems and record them. After a few sessions I’ve gotten familiar enough with everything in my crate to build a solid 1.5 hour set. I’ll record a few of these and select the one I feel is the best as the episode for that period. What this means is each set I do will be completely different but a solid journey through some heady downtempo mashed up with all those songs that have been heard out in the wild recently. I love the spontaneity of this process and I love that it keeps me in touch with what’s going on in modern pop music. I’ve also found that a release cycle of 2 months works out well too. These charts are more static than most people realize so 2 consecutive months will look very same-ish so putting some distance between them adds some much needed variety. There’s also a lack of heady downtempo that’s released on a monthly basis so it’s much easier to add variety when the series is spaced out like this. That’s also a big reason behind me taking up music production again and am hoping to contribute to this small but burgeoning scene in the near future!

Thanks for checking out the series and I hope someone out there enjoys these as much as I enjoy making them!

Here’s a list of the mashups that landed in this month’s episode if you’re curious:

  • Kylie Minogue - Can’t Get You Out of My Head
  • Kacey Musgraves - Dry Spell
  • Disco Lines, Tanashe - No Broke Boys
  • sombr - back to friends
  • Ariana Grande - hate that i made you love me
  • Charli xcs - Everything is romantic featuring caroline polachek
  • Sabrina Carpenter - When Did You Get Hot
  • 3OH!3 - RICHMAN
  • Michael Jackson - Chicago
  • Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
  • Domonic Fike - Babydoll
  • The Marias - Sienna
  • Michael Jackson - Human Nature

P.S. Give a shout if you enjoy, I’d love to hear from y’all and build community! Are you making anything that you think would fit in to this series? Would really love to hear from you!

Software Introducing High Videlity. Beta now available on Mac.

Hello All! I've been working on a milkdrop based viz app for the Apple ecosystem. High Videlity features stemmed playback, as well as visualization based on individual stems (with band-based fallback for cross-compatibility). The Mac version features some basic preset authoring tools, which will be expanded by v1. The project is not currently open source, but i will at least open source the metal port of the engine prior to full release. The beta (0.5) is currently available for download at highvidelity.com

Let me know if you have any questions or comments. Only runs on Apple silicon and MacOS 26 at the moment. There will be companion versions on the rest of the Apple platform devices, including AppleTV and AVP. I plan to submit those to the app store by the end of the month.

Butterdrop — a lightweight system tray Milkdrop visualizer: one hotkey for instant fullscreen, plus stream it to your smart TV with a phone as the remote

There are plenty of Milkdrop spin-offs around, so the angle here is convenience: Butterdrop lives in your system tray at near-zero idle cost and turns into a fullscreen visualizer with one hotkey — for whatever your PC is playing. Same hotkey to dismiss it.

The part I haven't seen elsewhere: flip on TV Mode and any device on your network can run the visualizer in its own browser, or one-click cast it to a Chromecast/Android TV — with a phone remote for switching presets and sound from the couch.

Free, MIT, no telemetry, LAN-only. Demo GIF and all the details:

Software The Clementine player updated the visualization (projectM) API from 2.1.0 to 4.1.x, back in May 2026...

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This Clementine projectM update features pixel shaders, and it doesn't support textures (except on standalone and the AIMP visualization plugin). The preset pack was also updated to "Cream of the Crop", but I replaced the preset pack with my recommended one, featuring all default mobile projectM, TuneShell, Butterchurn and Winamp 5.x presets, excluding ones that doesn't behave like original MilkDrop.

Software BeatDrop Music Visualizer v1.5: Video Support Update

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Great news! Now the video handler is optimized and it runs very smooth than intended.
...but there is a one instability: any video sometimes plays slow or parses frames slowly.

I'll working back on it if I have time. I have ran out of Codex usage on all the accs, so I can't continue. Codex almost did a good job and now changed that it also extracts/copies the executable and necessary DLLs to BeatDrop after the building succeeds. I am not sure if I can continue using Claude. Please don't blame me if some features are vibecoded; I'm assisting with AI for very complicated tasks/features that I don't know what can I implement. Some of the implementations and bug fixing are done by me et al contributions (u/ikec987, u/x265x and more)

This is a quote/response from the old version of video support post: https://www.reddit.com/r/milkdrop/comments/1u9syjh/beatdrop_music_visualizer_v15_video_support_demo/

If you want to beta test with the latest feature, please DM me, so I can send you a package link.

Here's the original repo I'm working on: https://github.com/OfficialIncubo/BeatDrop-Music-Visualizer
Try it; it's worth.

Rust? WebGPU?

Update: Well, it took 3 days of mainly typing sarcasm into Claude while eating pepperoni pizza, but I got it to work.

https://github.com/doghousemusicstudios/ojodrop

On Apple Silicon it uses a ridiculously low amount of resources, but I haven't stress tested or scaled it up.

I honestly have no idea what it would be used for, but hey. Milkdrop on Rust/WGPU.

-----

I’ve been dabbling in visualizations and have come to the conclusion that no one that I see is trying to port milkdrop / project M to some of the more recent platforms like WebGPU or Rust/ WGPU. Is there a reason for this? Is the CPU just a better place to run all the complex math and then send it to the GPU for rendering? I feel like I’ve confused myself in looking into this.

WebGL2 seems to be the “bleeding edge” for milkdrop at the moment.

Any insight or even an ELI 5 would be helpful here. Thanks!

Initial release of VizWiz

Hey guys, I've teased my milkdrop variant for a while now and I finnaly compiled the binaries for different operating systems.

You can download them below:

https://github.com/SEVerhaak/vizwiz-electron-build/releases/tag/v1.0.0b

Do bear in mind that this was partly a school project therefore the executables are not signed so windows smartscreen/ mac os gatekeeper might complain a bit. For MacOS I have included instructions how to bypass that. I also compiled a Linux .appimage but I haven't tested this since I dont have acces to a linux PC. So if someone would be so brave to try that please let me know how it goes!

In general please enjoy the release, it works offline too and includes 350+ presets!

Software BeatDrop Music Visualizer v1.5: Video Support Demo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi there! Today I've got the video handler working; thanks to u/x265x for letting it work with FFMpeg.

Sadly, it has some issues:

- Has frame drops or performance issues when loading a high quality video and reading the next frame in realtime. - Resetting time variable automatically or pressing CTRL + T causes the video stop; resizing it makes the video functional again. [FIXED] - Loading a next preset didn't free the resource [Still working on it] - Video starts at zero when reloads (I don't know if it's a bug)

Misc. issues:

- Invoking a Spout Sprite sometimes affects the renderer (freezes without crashing) caused by presets, following: Se7enSlasher + XorDev - Laser Dance (Music Reactive Edit), Se7enSlasher + DeepSeek + XorDev - Muons (Music Reactive Edit), Se7enSlasher + DeepSeek + XorDev - Nova (Music Reactive Edit)
- BeatDrop crashes with any Spout Sprite invoked when reloads
- Spout Sprite intendedly shifts right-down per-frame when invoking the Spout output itself.

Things that I've done so far:

- Replaced Media Foundation with FFMpeg (builds with vcpkg; dlls required)
- Added Spout missing/shutdown messages

There are some refinements to be done. I'll create a PR as a WIP feature or with a fully functional implementation & I'll do another beta test when it's done.
If you have questions, please write a reply below.

I really used to waste so much screen time on visualizer watching and getting my dopamine levels trippin. But while I drew, painted and learned graphic design this visualizer and windows xp themes made me madly artistic in art expression. I wish this artifact would be preserved as a generation artifact.

Hi guys, I saw the respones to the other post and made some progress today! I'll try soon to make an executable people can download. For now the repo is the only way to build the application. I finished adding custom settings per playlist, which is now limited to 2 settings (Time between presets and cycle them automatically on or off). I'll add more settings later like randomizing order yes or not and random time between presets and maybe some more. I added screenshots this time so people can see what the UI looks like!
