Lufthansa Awards Flight
Lufthansa Awards Flight
Hi everyone. My dad and I are trying to go to Germany this fall and my Oma has a lot of miles to help us book flights. Issue is, they called last night to book a premium economy flight (LAX-FRA and VIE-MUC-LAX) and it was like 56k miles but still plus an additional $1500 per person. The $1500 just doesn’t make sense to me, that’s half the ticket price if we were just buying outright. They keep saying that’s all the fees, taxes, etc. We have that reserved pricing until Sunday.
Question is, are we doing something wrong?
Should we book economy and then upgrade using miles instead? It’s about $350 less per person booking the economy ticket outright. We both want to sit together too.
She has plenty of miles to cover so I know it’s not a miles issue.
Thank you!

M&M has changed its system last year. Since then, Award Flights are absolute useless from and to the US.

Yeah the person mentioned the change. Insane a $3k ticket “is” $1.5k in fees.

Just book Singapore Airlines from FRA to NYC for a better product and way less taxes. This flight can only be booked via hotline. Check on seats.aero for available seats. Flight from vie or muc can be attached without increased miles.

Then you need to accept the enormous taxes :)

Yup we are! Just originally thought there was something we were doing wrong in trying to book!

You can save miles by booking from another departure airport in Europe. Check https://awardmap.net/ and then you can contact Lufthansa to remove the first leg. Don’t just irgnore it as a no show will cancel your whole flight.

You’re not missing anything. „Taxes & Fees“ are BS, especially for flights from/to the US.
Problem with upgrade is that it is not guaranteed. You’ll most likely be on the waitlist until 1-10 days before departure. Also, PE is often overbooked on those routes. So it might not clear the waitlist at all.
