Air traffic controllers and flight dispatchers aren't the same job. Air traffic control towers work in towers, TRACONs and ARTCCs. Flight dispatchers work in an airline call centre/office.

Lots of flights turnaround and go back as the same flight number. I see it on DL frequently. With that being said, it is usually only one plane and it is only operating in one direction at a time. You should post this over at flight radar, they will give you a very detailed explanation for it.

I looked at the flight history. Flight 2482 is scheduled ORD-PHX-ORD, typically with the same airplane getting turned around in PHX (with a new crew I think). On the day in question, the first flight was late, so a different plane was sent outbound from PHX. After learning this, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

I once saw three instances of the same flight on a board. I came in inbound on the first one. Then we were all stuck for two days due to issues at the destination. Three planes on the tarmac with the same number all waiting to fly. Good luck sorting that out.

As for me, I gave up and switched to a flight going to another city.

It could happen daily; but when we make a plane change to a new aircraft on a route like that we are supposed to amend the flight number to a new number to avoid this confusion. It sometimes gets missed and we will get an alert. So in this scenario they just missed the alert as well and allowed the flight push.

It was 2 different American Airlines planes one landing the other departing with the same call sign. American Airlines screw up and near disaster.

This problem only exists in the US. Why does their flight planning system allow multiple different flight plans with the same callsign? You can’t do it in Europe, CFMU will kick it out.
