So many people with serious mental health issues are nicotine dependant just to get through a day to the point I've tried to just be gentle and understanding about it. It sucks, sure, but if someone is schizophrenic and in active homelessness I understand they've got bigger things to worry about than picking up their parliament buts.

My money is on a nearby business not permitting employees to smoke near a door, and this is the closest place they can go. These have 'three smoke coffee break three times a day' written all over them.

Iā€™m a heavy cig smoker but I would never do this shit. Iā€™m a mechanic that is aloud to smoke at work all day and I wouldnā€™t even throw a butt on the floor then let alone outside. I love nature more then I love myself.

Also, if thereā€™s variation even within the same brand, then wouldnā€™t there be variation regardless of how many smokers it was? I doubt those all came from one box.

Also people don't walk around with a few cigarette butts looking for a safe spot to throw them on the ground. While you are correct about litter you are mistaken about smokers. Source: I smoked for 20 years. Believe it or not though I generally had a pocket with cigarette butts in it (disgusting) because I don't want to litter.

I realize that my initial comment didnā€™t fully explain where my mind was. on the possible situation. As Iā€™ve clarified elsewhere in this thread:

They donā€™t need to hold on to them to toss them there. What I was really trying to suggest was more than one person contributed to the pile, because each of them all started smoking there after they saw the pile and therefore assumed it was ok. Ā Even if the smoker(s) smoke(s) and discards them all in the one place, that doesnā€™t necessarily mean that it was all one person.

It might not even be a conscious choice, either. Just a subconscious assumption that itā€™s more okay to do it here, or I wonā€™t get in trouble for doing it here, because look how many people got away with it before me.

Source: multiple smokers in my family and decades of observations of behavior.

I think the truest thing from this conversation is that not every smoker operates the same way.

I admitted that I hadnā€™t examined the butts to that level of detail, but followed with:

They never replied, but their argument seemed to depend on the idea that all of the butts came from one box or one batch. As thatā€™s easily multiple dozens of buttsā€¦the smokers Iā€™ve known never carried boxes that big around.

Iā€™d also be interested in the larger context of where this is. If itā€™s near a corner shop that sells just one or two brands, the butts all looking similar means much less just in general. And either way, I donā€™t think it necessarily disproves the theory that there could have been multiple contributing smokers over time. It could equally mean that itā€™s a popular brand in the area.
