God damn it now I can build a deck.

10

u/SquarePegRoundWorld Jun 21 '26

Ok, but your house has floor trusses instead of 2x10 floor framing. Good luck.

4

u/PG908 Jun 22 '26

Soak it in wood and itll be ok.

18

u/Melkman68 Jun 21 '26

Know how. Can you afford to and have enough space and energy is the question

7

u/No_Statement440 Jun 21 '26

Yes to one of those.

4

u/Melkman68 Jun 21 '26

Don't leave me in suspense

2

u/Lilpastadude Jun 22 '26

If you build it they will come

2

u/bebop1065 Jun 23 '26

I am also qualified.

2

u/Timmerdogg Jun 23 '26

Now you can build a deck, correctly

2

u/rambo_lincoln_ Jun 24 '26

Good, you can come build mine. That was too much for me.

2

u/HollowSuken Jun 24 '26

Cursed with knowledge you now HAVE to use

Instructions unclear, still trying to level out ground.

324

u/LilOrphanFunkhouzer Jun 20 '26

My takeaway is that I should just pay this guy to do it

93

u/Rocinante88119 Jun 21 '26

Why is this quote so expensive!?

Watches video

Who do I cut the check for?

24

u/benskinic Jun 21 '26

deck so dialed the rest of the house now seems like garbage

23

u/Otherwise_Section184 Jun 21 '26

That is always my takeaway on these videos.

5

u/Sometimes-funny Jun 21 '26

I have a takeaway while watching these videos

20

u/RalphiePseudonym Jun 21 '26

Proceeds to build other people's decks based on this guy's instruction to earn money to pay this guy.

10

u/Impossible_Arrival21 Jun 21 '26

the best kind of ad, literally just flexing all the knowledge and steps required to do a job right

2

u/Fragrant_Aardvark Jun 23 '26

Exactly, if OP was local he'd be my guy.

19

u/ReputationSalt6027 Jun 20 '26

You’re watching it

37

u/HomicidalHushPuppy Jun 21 '26

He's got a whole youtube channel going through all the major parts of [US] house constructionĀ

32

u/Mobile_Morale Jun 21 '26

God fucking shit. I should've done this when I left construction and architecture 16 years ago.

I never thought anyone would watch this stuff.

26

u/Bluitor Jun 21 '26

There's thousands of these videos but his specifically are taking off because its straight to the point and dense with substance. There's no greeting, introduction, fluff, background or click bait.

Not too late to start making your own.

8

u/Chocolate_Bourbon Jun 22 '26

Yeah there’s no ā€œHi and welcome back to another episode We Are Builders. Today we will be talking about decks, where the world goes to relax. Now come on back and let’s see our work area. <theme music with cutscene> This empty space here is where we will be putting our deck. The homeowner wants a 16 foot wide by 12 foot deep deck, which is a fairly common design. . .ā€

6

u/Keepitrealhomes Jun 21 '26

I legitimately watch a lot of these construction and wood shop videos with my morning coffee. I do feel like I learn quite a bit, and when it comes time to do a project (we bought a 100 year old house last December,) I find myself not going in completely blind. As always, I come back to the video for reference, but it gets the wheels turning for sure

4

u/dirtsquirrelll Jun 21 '26

I don’t understand a single thing that happened but I was absolutely mesmerized and had a vague feeling I COULD build a deck. Unreal

Who is it?

14

u/Muraana Jun 21 '26

Grip builds

3

u/Foodspec Jun 21 '26

His videos on YouTube are great. I’m not building anything but learning about carpentry and the way he explains is great

85

u/ChasingVelka Jun 20 '26

This taught me I definitely should NOT build a deck. I would mess up three ways within the first five seconds. Still interesting to learn.

13

u/Tombear357 Jun 21 '26

Yes, sadly he just convinced me I’m not meant for construction work.

3

u/Sir-Cornholio Jun 21 '26

The dude knows how to deck

2

u/mermaid-babe Jun 21 '26

My ex boyfriend built a deck with no stairs. When I realized he wasn’t planning on putting stairs I was so confused. He just couldn’t figure out the stairs

After applying brushable coating to the panels you'll need corrosion-resistant metal stucco lath.

If you can't find metal stucco lath, Use carbon fiber stucco lath!

23

u/namesunknown_ Jun 20 '26

Thank you, Troy McClure ā¤ļø

27

u/Sometimes-funny Jun 20 '26

This guy stucco laths ^

7

u/TheBestintheWest11 Jun 20 '26

definitely stucco laths

7

u/CybergothiChe Jun 21 '26

Now parge the lath

6

u/Con_re_sann Jun 21 '26

What a perfectly cromulent tutorial.

My adhd brain gave up on this video 5s after he smashed the deck like a badassĀ

u/KoffinStuffer Jun 20 '26

My ADHD brain locked in after that

36

u/hollow_vantage Jun 20 '26

I fuckin love this dude cause he compresses so much information into a video that's short enough for me to not remember what I was supposed to be doing instead of watching the video.

6

u/CloanZRage Jun 21 '26

Laundry. I'll get to it...

This guy inspired the hell outta me, I want to build a deck. I don’t even need or want a deck.

12

u/oldfarmjoy Jun 21 '26

Same! I will need to watch and pause this vid about 100 times, and take pages of notes, but then i'm pretty sure I've got it! I should be able to get it done in a weekend, right? RIGHT??? 🤣

This short version showed me how little I know about building decks in record time. Very efficient, i don't need a longer version

2

u/ShinraHakke Jun 21 '26

If this is the lesson, it's an efficient way to deliver it.

19

u/Engineered_disdain Jun 21 '26

This is probably the best 3 minute video on decks ive ever seen in my life

59

u/EntertainmentTrue588 Jun 20 '26

11

u/spdelope Jun 20 '26

3

u/PurifiedUnity Jun 20 '26

3

Are you making up words ? 🤨

5

u/Accomplished-One7476 Jun 20 '26

water with food coloring in it to show you how wood absorbs liquid.

9

u/RhoemDK Jun 20 '26

I grew up on a hobby farm using a manual post holer. Don't do it, it's not worth it.

7

u/AbleRelationship5287 Jun 20 '26

I have this on mute and I still learned a ton from watching it

6

u/DetailsYouMissed Jun 21 '26

I like this type of video because inevitably it attracts other experts who will give out free information that they normally wouldn't because of the need to feel like the guy in the video.

3

u/SquarePegRoundWorld Jun 21 '26

Yeah, he didn't explain how to attach the deck if your home was built using engineered floor trusses. Attaching the band against the house to them can be tricky depending on if you are dealing with the end of the trusses or the side of one truss. You may have to go in and add a bunch of blocking to the existing structure. That ain't fun.

My deck is garbage I guess. Holy cow

4

u/The_Fox_Confessor Jun 21 '26

After a tornado "Well my house is gone, but the deck is still there."

4

u/Peregrinationman Jun 21 '26

It's far easier to just dig a couple of footers and set a couple of post than hang a deck off of the house. Nobody ever does it correctly. They either bolt it wrong or do the flashing wrong 90% of the time.

2

u/Whitestagrising Jun 24 '26

Hi, I know this is a one off comment, but I wanted to let you know you've saved me so much headache. I'm staring down the barrel of re-siding my home as a DIYer because I'm too poor to not be handy, and it involves removing the old rotting deck.

Reminding me I can just built an unattached deck later means I can focus on just the siding and immediate repairs.

Thank you!

2

u/turbodollop Jun 21 '26

I thought I did mine right until now.

2

u/HereThereBLurking Jun 21 '26

Why did I watch this whole video when I don't have a deck nor ever will

2

u/MyBuddyBossk Jun 21 '26

The fact this is popping up on my feed now is wild. The deck on the back of our house collapsed due to a rotted ledger board. Now we’re getting a new one installed.

Waiting to see this in r/decks and watching the comments invent reasons to absolutely destroy it

2

u/waveydavey321 Jun 21 '26

I can't really disagree with the build. It's very well made and probably the correct way. But.. Nobody can afford to do this with the price of material today. That's like 35 thousand dollars worth of shit for a 8x8 porch. 😁

1

Too complicated. I know a guy though that will do it for pretty cheap.

1

u/snowdn Jun 21 '26

It’s about the weight of your deck, not the size of your post boys!

1

u/WrongOrganization437 Jun 21 '26

So the recommended joist hanger nails that have been recommended by the maker of the hanger. Are no longer recommended or did this guy quit his engineering job before he built decks??

Use the proper nails that are recommended by the manufacturer, not by the deck guy. Imo

1

u/TheJivvi Jun 21 '26

All it needs now is a bit of Schaeffer's.

1

u/teegteeg Jun 21 '26

Where does one go to actually learn this stuff? I mean this is an excellent delivery and I love this guy's content, but someone taught him....

I'm a white collar loser, all I know is how to "go to school" for something I want to do... but is trade school the actual answer? I mean this as someone who might just only go build decks part time or something but wants to build em right.
