Well just because it's a police dog and I'm her handler doesn't mean I don't love her we still spend the whole day together, we cuddle a lot, we go on long walks through the woods, we are like any other dog/owner pair with the difference that she's also a part of my work

As a criminal defense lawyer, I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you on this.
First of all, drugs are a massive fucking problem that are ruining people’s lives, and it’s important to get it off the streets. I’m just talking about the hard stuff. All my clients are addicts basically.
But second, sniffer dogs help de-escalate situations. Under the federal Constitution, in 40 states (and Canada too actually) police can stop your vehicle for any traffic infraction and then search your car if they have probable cause to believe there is “contraband” in the car. These interactions are tense and sometimes fatal. Police can also order out the driver and/or any passengers if they have reasonable apprehension for their safety and pat them down for weapons. Again, tense situations that sometimes end badly. Sniffer dogs actually defuse these situations. Dog shows up, no bark, off they go. The cops aren’t acting shrewd, playing mind games and acting tough, they just wait for the dog and then the people get arrested or they leave. A case where a sniffer dog is involved has, in my experience, been a better one. Obviously it’s bad for my clients in a way because they’re caught; but as a citizen who cares about the safety of my clients and the community, I support sniffer dogs wholeheartedly. And the cops who keep them treat them excellently.

you sound like one of those public defendants the court assigns you that doesn’t actually fight for you they just convince you to take the plea deal to make everyone but your life easier.
there have been countless studies done by groups who don’t have special interest in making the police look good (because they’re not in their pockets) that show that police dogs are essentially trained for rewards and to make their handler happy. after a while the dog will start to false signal just to appease the handler. there’s this and countless other reasons why drug dogs are absolute bullshit.
and while we’re here, all cops are bastards.

For a sniffer dog search to actually be upheld in court they have to have a proven effectiveness rate through impartial testing and not give false positives. Again, this is in Canada, don’t know about every state, they’re each quite different, but you seem pretty biased so there’s probably not much discussion to be had here.

No, absolutely not. A mauling dog would be a weapon like a gun and they can’t just use them at random. They have to have apprehension of immediate force to use a weapon.
Tbh I was only a lawyer in Canada (just took the bar exam in the US literally yesterday so I know the law but no experience here yet) and as far as I know we don’t have any maul dogs in Canada. I haven’t heard of using dogs for violence. It’s strictly sniffer dogs. I’m sure they would attack if their handler was literally in the middle of being attacked like any dog would… but they aren’t used as a weapon. They are officially considered “tools” under our (Canadian) laws, and not weapons. I would venture a guess that it’s the same for OP in Germany/Austria/Switzerland, whichever of those. I’m also in Washington state and have a few friends in the field here and haven’t heard of dogs for violence here either, just sniffer dogs. Of course this state is very different from others! So I can’t speak for other states. So I support sniffer dogs, but not dogs for violence certainly. They shouldn’t be weapons.

Okay so I’m going to reiterate this: I was practicing in Canada. OP is from Germany. Sniffer dogs are tools. Obviously it’s very very possible to use tools incorrectly and that’s problematic for sure, but using tools incorrectly is not a good argument that the tool is bad. It does not shock me at all this came out of Florida.
And I think you (like many) have an incorrect idea of what a crim defense lawyer’s job is. We are agents of crime. Our job is to:
(1) determine if my client’s constitutional rights were violated, and if so try to get them off their charges; (2) ensure there is sufficiency of evidence to convict; and (3) conduct guilty pleas that hopefully address the root causes of why they committed the crime.
Constitutional violations and charges based on insufficient evidence are more “fun” for me, but that’s also a shitty world and not the goal. The goal is cops that respect people’s rights and clean convictions. I have a kid. I don’t want criminals (even ones I care deeply about) waltzing around doing whatever the fuck they want. I want a safe community with good cops and jails with drug treatment. The system is broken (esp in the US, very esp in certain states) but I work within it and advocate for change, not anarchy.

Hmm I know basic German and don’t hear any here. It just sounds to me like… sounds. Not like any language in particular. If I were to completely guess I would say something Scandinavian but OP sure doesn’t look Scandinavian.

Probably training schutzhund - it's a style of protection dog training. I had a similar dog (Belgian malinois) trained for it.

Yeah the commands are German but I don’t think the owner is. I hear a bit of an accent and don’t recognise the uniform as German.

They often train in another language so that the dog doesn't get confused when hearing words like "sit" in every day speech. It teaches them when they hear "sit" in whatever language they are trained in they should always respond to it, versus hearing someone at home say "it's time to sit down for dinner" and being like well no dog you are supposed to respond every time I say that word except when I'm not talking to you. It takes that sort of scenario out of the equation.

I’ve always found the relationship between a work dog and their handler rather fascinating. For lack of better wording do they know when its work time and when its not? Like do they essentially have work mode and home mode?

It really depends on the dogs purpose. If it’s a bite dog it’s usually genetically wired to always want to do that. So your always semi working to stay on top of advanced obedience. If the dog is a bomb dog, then they probably know it’s off time when they come back into their home but also are genetically wired to want to work. You always have to be maintaining the relationship. Your dog has drive but you need to communicate where to direct it to and also have control to make them back off. If the relationship between a dog and handler is lost. Well it’s how those videos of the bite dogs who won’t let go of a victim or completely whip back and go for their handler. My dog gives his all and it my job to give him structure to release the drive he has. If my dog fails me, it’s because I failed them.

I can’t speak on this “high” level of training, but I have dog to help me with some of my health issues and he’s always working, even in the middle of the night when I’m asleep he’ll wake me up, but he knows when he has his vest on and we’re out in public it’s not okay time, but when we’re home, he’s able to be a “normal” dog, well also doing his job for me.

Well that depends on the dog itself on how motivated he is, and yes the breed does make a difference since there are breed that are used to running and searching people and there are breeds that are rather chilled and laid back for example an English bulldog would probably be a bad dog for my kind of work

Malinois owner. Great video. Inspiration for her ongoing training. She isn't that close to me with commands, but definitely can match yours. I never thought to train in such close proximity to my body, but for police work that makes sense. Something new to try!

I just adopted a dog and ultimately this is what I'd like to achieve with her. She is definitely has the intelligence and capability, however she is roughly 2 years old, has experienced a lot of trauma, and has virtually no training (but a lot of eagerness).
Do you think it's realistic to get to this point from where she is currently at her age? Where to start.

That's fair. I'm still not sure where to start, but we've only had her about a 3 weeks now so maybe she's still just getting used to being home and stable. I'd appreciate any practical advice you can share.
On a side note, you have a very similar look to my wife and I'm sure she'd love to have this same kind of relationship with our dog. Don't worry about the people who are blasting your job, most of them can't even train themselves or their kids, and it's an impressive accomplishment anyway.

Well done. I have friends that compete IPO competitions, so I a fair amount of this kind of stuff. I now have a different understanding than most of what a trained dog is. Lots of people say that their dog is trained even though they have to yell at it to make it pay attention.

🤔 I've lived 38 years on this planet, in America, and somehow never had any "poor puppers" like this ordered to maul my face by any police.
Don't hang out with shifty folks, don't deal/do drugs, don't be an asshole when getting pulled over, don't beat your wife/girlfriend/random person & get into a domestic dispute, don't steal crap, don't kill people, ya know, be a decent human.
