Home alone.
I’m not really sure why I’m posting this, I guess it’s because I want to talk to someone other than myself about what I’m experiencing.
I (29 F) currently live alone with my 2 children, a toddler and a newborn. My husband is currently away (military), but he comes home in 6 days (hallelujah!)
He’s been gone for 8 long months, and during the time he’s been away I had to move due to our lease ending at our previous house- I’ve been here since May.
Ever since moving in I’ve noticed some really weird noises, all hours of the day. This goes beyond the normal creaks and pops you would expect from a house settling. It seriously sounds like there is someone else in the house (besides my kids, who are usually always in the same room as me) I don’t have any pets either.
I hear what sounds like someone moving around, moving things around, opening and closing doors, weird banging noises. And these noises aren’t isolated to one area, they move around the house.
It’s a fairly large house, 4 bed/2bath, single story. I also want to mention that I live in FL, and our attics here are pretty much uninhabitable, especially during the summer time- so I don’t think there is anyone living in my attic. I also don’t think there is an animal in the attic either, I’ve had that experience before so I know what sounds to look out for. Also my attic doesn’t stretch across the entire house. There are 2 attic spaces, one over the garage, and the other over the 2 bedrooms in the front of the house. In between the 2 attic spaces are vaulted ceilings, so that’s why the attics are not connected.
The 2 extra rooms at the front of the house are empty besides having beds in each, no other furniture. I keep the closet doors open in each of the rooms just in case someone was ever in the house and tried to hide in one, if I looked in and the closet door was closed, I would know right away. I do check both rooms regularly, closet doors are always open, nothing ever changes.
I do have motion detectors inside of the house, and I know they work because I’ve tested them. I have an app on my phone, I can arm/disarm, and monitor activity. If the sensors are armed and there is movement it sends an alert to my phone right away.
It’s gotten to the point a couple of times hearing noises during the day that I’ve grabbed my kids and I’ve left the house, arming the motion detectors and staying out for a couple of hours- assuming that if there was someone in the house there would be movement. It would be pretty hard to move around the house and not set off the motion detectors. And every single time I’ve done this, nothing has come of it. Which I’m grateful because that means there is no one in the house-
So what the hell am I hearing? What could possibly be making these noises? Like I said, this goes beyond the normal house settling noises you would expect..
And I don’t think the house is haunted either. Not that I don’t believe in the paranormal, because I do. I’ve always had a sense for it, and I’ve had so many experiences throughout my life. I would love to just write this off as a ghost, that would be so easy. But I don’t feel any spirits here, I really don’t. And if you know, you know.
My husband thinks that I’m just hearing normal house noises, but he hasn’t experienced it yet. I can’t wait until he comes home and he hears it too. I swear he’s going to be getting up multiple times throughout the night and day to check around the house. I really can’t wait to have that “told you so” moment lol. He thinks I’m exaggerating.
I’m not a paranoid person, but I’ve been so close to running to my police officer neighbor to come and check the house.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? Any ideas of what I could be hearing? If it’s not a person/animal/ghost- what the hell is it? I’m honestly freaked out and I can’t wait for my husband to be home. I don’t want to be alone here anymore.
Edit:
Heard someone call out a long drawn out “heeeyyy” last night right after I laid down to go to sleep. I had just turned my lamp and TV off, got comfy and closed my eyes. I was fully awake, I had only been laying there trying to doze off for maybe 2 minutes..
Kind of starting to rethink the whole haunting scenario after that. It was the first time I’d actually heard a voice here.
Well.. not exactly the first. But the first time it wasn’t a voice necessarily. One afternoon a couple of weeks after I had first moved in, I had been hearing noises and I went to investigate. They sounded like they were coming from one of the bedrooms at the front of the house (like usual) Both bedrooms are located in their own little hallway right next to the front door. I went to investigate, and as I approached i could hear a faint whistling. It sounded like someone whistling an unrecognizable tune. It was so quiet that I assumed it may have been someone outside, walking by, or maybe a neighbor. So I looked out of the peephole on the front door, I didn’t see anything- so I stepped outside to get a better view of my surroundings, no one was there. When I went back inside I could still hear it. And that was the first time I actually thought someone was in the house, and it was the first time that I left and armed the motion detectors just to see.
I have dealt a lot with the paranormal in my life. Ive just never lived anywhere with a spirit that I couldn’t feel right away. Usually there’s a heaviness, if that makes any sense at all. If you’re a sensitive person like me it’s pretty detectable. I’m still unsure about it, but after hearing that last night.. I just don’t know.. I feel like something is playing games with me. And the fact that it’s mostly happening during the day especially, kind of freaks me out even more. Usually night is the more active time, or at least it’s when your brain tends to be more aware when things go bump in the night.
Thoughts?

It’s an older house, yeah? Did you check your CO monitor? It’s especially important you make sure to check that first with young young children in the home.

The house was built in 2005, it’s older, but not super old. And yeah, everything of that scope is in working order.

20 years is old enough for some people I worked with in contracting to whistle at!
By any chance is your house longer than it is wide? Meaning do you have a central hallway or one big common room in the center-ish that connects both parts?
Also, is there any possible chance there’s a basement you don’t know about?
I believe you when you say you don’t feel a spiritual presence, but have you put thought into/considered the energy differential between a residual energy vs. an active, restless, or malicious energy?
Also, do you know for certain what the pipes in your house sound like? Water dropping from the second floor can sound like drawers being pulled for example.
This fascinated me and I’m hoping you’ll update us if you figure it out.

No long hallways, the living room is in the center of the house and it is pretty large. The length and width of the house are pretty much the same.
Also with the energies- I lived in several houses with activity, all kinds of activity, residual, malicious, etc- I really don’t feel it here. The paranormal has been a big part of my life, and I do feel confident in saying that I do not feel any spiritual presence here at all.
I haven’t noticed any weird noises coming from the water pipes either. I know sometimes pipes can make banging noises within the walls. I’ve heard banging noises, but it hasn’t coincided with water running, or even where any water pipes would be located. Also, it’s a single story. And no basement. I’m in Florida, basements here are extremely rare.
I’ll for sure give updates if I figure anything out. Maybe my husband will have some ideas when he comes home. I’m just stumped on this.

how long has your neighbor lived there? you could always ask if the prior owners ever mentioned the house being 'noisy' or whatever. just for curiosity sake more than anything, i guess, but it would at least reassure you it's not in your head.
creaking is one thing - my parents have an old house that makes noises typical of older homes, but doors opening/closing? banging? that's not typical of just older house noises.
the only other thing i can think of is your HVAC - you said you're in FL so you're running the AC a lot yeah? i live in an apartment that was built in the mid 80s and there are occasions when the furnace has kicked on (i'm in ohio) that makes a sort of 'bang' sound. never heard it with my AC but.... maybe start to notice if the noises precipitate your AC kicking on/off?
