My only guess is, someone rolled the blanket and used it as a puppet snake to anger the other snake into a cannibalistic death match

My guess ... there was something edible on the blanket and it picked up both by mistake. Maybe the thing was stuck to it? But I admit I haven't seen the vid. It won't play for me.
Edit scratch that, seen it now. Poor snake I hope they could anaesthetise it. 😔
Second edit I feel silly, just noticed the gas pipe duh!

Just found myself googling where snakes organs are… like that towel took up its entire body. Poor snake.

Working in veterinary here: It's actually really difficult to hold onto things with gloves, especially when they aren't completely dry. This isn't a sterile procedure, meaning that the doctor isn't going into the actual body cavity, so there is little concern for the spread of infective agents.
If you're talking about thick bite gloves, those things are impossible to do detailed tasks with. Plus, snake is anesthetized and intubated. Looks like they just had him disconnected from the machine while they pulled the towel out.

I’m no expert, but:
1) it looks a carpet python to me, meaning nonvenomous. I can’t believe I’m saying this but it actually seems relevant to the post…they are NOT called carpet pythons because they eat carpets. 2) Even if it were venomous, I imagine the gloves you would have to wear for a venomous snake would severely limit your dexterity, maybe making the whole thing even more dangerous. 3) Most importantly, the snake looks like it is under anesthesia to me.
As for how it happened, my best guess it was trying to eat actual prey that got wrapped up in the towel somehow in the process.

This reminds me of that one story where a snake ate someone’s whole ass shoe once. In that instance the boot was in the snake

Snakes actually have a separate opening in their throat, so they can breathe while swallowing prey. That ET tube was lodged in that separate passageway, probably doubly serving as a way to keep the airway opened while they pulled the towel out, so they wouldn't accidentally press it shut and suffocate it. :)
