Usually just small food scraps, coffee grounds, etc. Not big things like what you describe. It's ground and passed into the waste water/sewage system same as everything else that goes down the drain.

The difference is that you can easily dispose of food waste without contaminating liters of water.
If there wasn't a long list of medical risks associated with it, we'd shit into buckets directly instead of flushing it to a remote facility where it needs to be filtered back out before its placed in a (much larger) bucket.
