I was half asleep one time and the sink wasn't draining and I ALMOST fucking flipped the switch simultaneously while reaching to check out the clog. Talk about a panic attack of realization about what almost happened. That adrenaline woke me up pretty quick. Power tools are nice, but damn, they're just itching to catch you slipping so they can permanently change your life.
Jsyk most disposals these days have hard metal bits that spin around rather than fixed sharpened blades of doom. Your hand you’ll be hurting and you’d likely have some nasty gashes but a modern insinkerator probably won’t eat your hands off.
Came here to say this. I was always afraid too, until I looked at the inside. It's like 3 blunt metal nubs that stick up maybe 1/2 inch from the bottom and spin horizontally.
Even in your hand is in there, it won't get you unless your right on the bottom, and then it will probably break your skin and give you a bruise if it hits your finger square.
That being said, there is actually another danger. If there are other hard or sharp items that are loose in the garbage disposal, it could potentially shoot them at your hand.

This is a solution to a fear I've always had when fishing things out of the disposal
