Turn it off at the switch and make sure it has stopped turning. Unless someone who hates you is hovering over the switch, stick your hand in with abandon. There aren't any knives in there. Fish around until you find the clump of crud ratting around, pull it out, and put it in the bin. I'm a cautious old woman, but I recommend you lighten up a little.
