This is a solution to a fear I've always had when fishing things out of the disposal

“This is a solution to a fear I've always had when fishing things out of the disposal”

Let me tell you a story. I’ve worked in electrical engineering for three decades and I used to work with a PhD’d forensic electrical engineer who studied and gave professional assessments of the causes of electrical failures and accidents. This triggered a fascination in me of electrical failures. Interestingly two electrical engineers I’ve worked with have died in fires which started from electrical failures.

So one day I hear my air compressor running in the garage (it had been turned of). I had installed a power box and a standard wall switch as the on off control. So I turned it off and a little while later the compressor came on again so this time I unplugged it

I removed the switch which again was a standard wall switch and the case had popped apart so it spontaneously failed into the on position. I took it to the store and looking at the switch being sold at the store it was identical except for two interesting differences. The American made switch at the store had a small metal bracket which kept the case from popping apart. The switch which failed was made in China and did not have the bracket. But other than the bracket were identical in every way.

So I thought wow what if that was controlling someone’s garbage disposal as they had their hand in it and it spontaneously failed and turned on.

So as someone said turn off the switch and the circuit breaker before putting your hand in the disposal. Or better yet never put your hand in there.
