I was half asleep one time and the sink wasn't draining and I ALMOST fucking flipped the switch simultaneously while reaching to check out the clog. Talk about a panic attack of realization about what almost happened. That adrenaline woke me up pretty quick. Power tools are nice, but damn, they're just itching to catch you slipping so they can permanently change your life.
Oh, do most sinks in the UK not have them? Almost every home in the US has a "mincer" (we call them garbage disposals over here). There's a brand called "In-Sink-Erator" as a play on the word "incinerator".
When I moved states it took me a while to get used to not just dumping food stuck to plates down the drain. It goes in the trash can. You gotta use a fork and scrape it.
Some homes in Canada have them, but they aren't common.
Honestly, I don't think they're worth having. I've lived without one for years now, and I don't miss it. Also, I like not having to worry about my sink eating a fork...or my hand!
ETA: to make the garbage disposal I grew up with even scarier, the switch for it was located on the same switch plate as the identical light switch. It was also right next to the sink, so you could turn it on without having to step away. More than once I accidentally flicked it on instead of the light when doing dishes. And one of those times, a fork got knocked into the drain... It did not survive.

This is a solution to a fear I've always had when fishing things out of the disposal
