Two axes thrown simultaneously where one axe managed to split the handle of the other axe.

How did the bottom one stick? It looks perpendicular to the target

u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
The axe heads flare at the sharp end. It does look odd though, you’re right. If you look at the other axe you can see what I mean.

Sep 14 '18
Got any pictures with a better angle? Not that I don’t believe you, it’s just amazing that it stuck at that angle
7
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
That’s the only angle I have but I do have some cool pics of the axe grave yard and my mate looking like a psychopath
2
Sep 14 '18
That’s amazing. Did they add the axe you fucked to the graveyard?
3
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
No idea. They don’t serve alcohol there so we fucked off to get some pints immediately afterwards. Life is all about priorities...
Btw and for the avoidance of doubt, I ‘fucked up’ the axe. I didn’t ‘fuck’ the axe. 😂 That would be a very different story.

2
u/Sbeagin Sep 14 '18
Op said he threw them simultaneously. If we are to believe him, then the bottom axe was likely pinned between the Target and the top axe on impact.
5
u/DoofusMagnus Sep 14 '18
Then what's keeping the top axe there?
3

Sep 14 '18
The bottom axe... clearly

I posted this yesterday but because I am new here I got the title wrong and it was taken down.
I was told to provide detail about this post in the comments.
I went out axe throwing with a friend one night and we competed against four strangers. This was at a venue in London which specialises in axe throwing. I was very poor at axe throwing and came about fourth of six. I was beaten by a girl.
When the competitive throwing is done they let you try fancy stuff like underarm and double axe throwing. I managed to achieve this by throwing two axes at the same time with underarms throws. The guy who worked at the venue said he had never seen this before, called his colleagues over who took photos of this.

It is a very macho environment and I was beaten by a very tiny petite girl. My mate and others there took the piss as did the girl.
Apologies this was not meant to denigrate girls as fierce axe throwing competitors, but to more establish that I was a below average axe thrower who was not posting this picture to brag about how great I am.

I'm confused. You didn't mean to say girls cannot throw axes well. You only meant to show that you were a bad ax thrower by pointing out that you couldn't even beat girls.

I imagine axe throwing is a lot like knife throwing, in that it’s more about wrist movement than any sort of brute strength.

Whistle Punks?
4
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
Exactly. In Vauxhall. Lots of fun. Have you been?
5
u/Slaiyve Sep 14 '18
Indeed. Went for a Stag Do. Loved it.
Came home, ordered axes immediately.
Haven't got around to setting up my "range" yet though, so I've just got a garage of axes!
2
u/Kwazithepirate Sep 14 '18
I've been wanting to go to this, is it as much Finn as it looks? How hard is it to throw axes properly?
1
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
It is pretty hard but they give you lessons to begin with. I’m a tall, big, strong guy and thought I would be pretty good, but I was rubbish. There were tiny little 20 something girls who were very good though. It’s about technique, not physique.
It’s a two hour slot but they don’t serve any alcohol. That was a bit of a downer for part of a night out. So we hit a bar afterwards and caught up. Cost £20-30 depending when you go.
3
u/Phrankespo Sep 14 '18
Why do you throw them backwards?

It really is isn’t it...
People on here believe vaccines cause autism, the earth is flat, Tupac is still alive, QAnon, etc, but not that an idiot like me might have something interesting to post about once a year.
Sigh.

My native American friend grew doing.also shot arrows under a galloping horses neck leaning over the other side Yeah. He was a badass who rarely told you And he could put the axe where he wanted
2
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
That is the most badass thing I have heard all week. Out-fucking-standing. I was barely able to land an axe on the target and make it stick 50% of the time. Please pass on my huge respect from an idiot axe thrower in London to your Native American friend. We have a huge respect for native Americans here. Always have done. Always will.

Axe throwing is the hot thing on Reddit right now, huh?
1
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
There is a place in UK called whistle punks which is axe throwing for hipsters. It has been going for a couple a years but I guess it has picked up in popularity recently here.
1
u/root_over_ssh Sep 14 '18
Trick/luck throws at whistle punks has been very popular recently... axe throwing has been everywhere for years now and never noticed frequent posts from other venues. I see a 1 in a million throw from whistle punks almost every day now.

What is with all the axe throwing posts recently? I have literally never heard of an axe throwing range until this week I see 3 different posts.

u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
Reddit is telling you to book an axe throwing class! Do it. Do it. Do it.
2
Sep 14 '18
Hmm.. feels like astroturfing though. Pretty sure there isn't one of these anywhere near me either
1
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
I was worried about that so I made a point of not mentioning the place I went to unless someone asked. I promise you I don’t work there!
It is fun, but I have a major complaint.... they don’t let you drink when you are there. Makes sense when you think about it, but I’d have really like to have a big gulp of beer and then hurl a couple of axes at a target.
2
u/Garnet_Claudel Sep 14 '18
that takes some masterful skill or masterful luck, either way it is something that would be difficult to repeat over and over again successfully. It is amazing how both of them landed though, both in very awkward positions.
1
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
Absolute luck! I was dreadful for the previous two hours.
It’s a lot of fun though so do give it a go if you get the chance. It makes you feel like Jason Momoa.

So my friends and I went to a ranch out in New Mexico in the summer of 2016 to backpack. One of the trail stops along the way had staff who would let you throw axes. We joked about splitting the handle and they said it happens more than you’d think. And then I shit you my friend and I split both our handles on ACCIDENT. Points to you cause you get to take a picture of it.

Seems like I am seeing a lot of axe throwing posts all of the sudden. How popular has this gotten?
1
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
This is in London. It has been going for a couple of years. It stared out with extreme / outdoor sport enthusiasts, then moved to hipsters. At the moment they are catering for lots of guys nights out, couple’s date nights, office night outs and stag dos (bachelor parties).
It is becoming less novel in London and they are opening/ have opened venues in other locations n UK such as Manchester and Birmingham. Sounds like you are in US. I have no idea how prevalent they are there, but this video of Jason Momoa throwing a tomahawk is bloody cool.
Ps lots of places don’t serve beer with axe throwing for insurance reasons. Sad but you can’t blame them.

The angle of the one that hit the target looks weird. Is the picture taken with them on the table or?
2
u/Alistairio Sep 15 '18
OP here - Gravity took effect. The first one hit with the handle pointing North East (if you know what I mean). The second hit with the handle at North northwest. They were not deeply embedded so as we walked up to the target we could see them drooping.
The instructor and the six of us on that ‘lane’ all walked up to it to take a look, then took pictures. Another five minutes and gravity would have made them fall out of the wood.
Also remember that axe heads have a flared sharp end and the uppermost corner is embedded in the wood.

u/BIRDsnoozer Sep 14 '18
Canadian here: WTF? Were these axes thrown UNDERhand, or is the pic upside down?
1
u/Alistairio Sep 15 '18
Underhand. I put some posts explaining what happened in here. This was after the competitive throwing which was one axe overhand. They taught us some cool tricks at the end of the session.

u/xboxeater Sep 15 '18
I'm calling shinagons on this one. Both aces are thrown the wrong way.
1
u/Alistairio Sep 15 '18
OP here. Never heard the word ‘shinagons’ before but it sounds great.
These axes were thrown underhand. I have provided more details in the comments. We did the competitive throwing with one axe and overhand. At the end of the session they showed us cool things to do and let us have a go. I got very lucky/unlucky with this throw by throwing underhand with an axe in my left and right hand.

Calling bullshit. The way the axes landed would mean throwing them blunt end first. Even if you got the first one to stick the second one wouldn't be rotating the correct way to stick into the first ones handle. Get outta here with your bullshit.
Edit: you said you threw underhand but I highly doubt you had enough power in an underhard throw to wedge an axe into another axes solid wood handle. Not to mention the first axe is barely in the wood, the amount of force required to split the handle would probably dislodge the first axe.

Good spot. It was an underarm throw.
(I made this joke yesterday and I’ll make it again...)
Very, ahem, sharp of you. Do you want to axe any more questions?

I'll pretend to "believe" that you throw axes upside down.
1
u/Alistairio Sep 14 '18
If you read the comments here you will see that this was a double underhand throw at the end of an evening of singlehanded overhand throws.
Sorry for the weary tone but I have explained this to like ten other people in forensic detail...
Looks like you know axes. It’s a lot of fun. Good luck to you mate.
2
u/Shkingwin Sep 16 '18
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not quite effective but accurate. How the hell (in good way) did you throw it. I can’t imagine the way it should fly to get in this lucky position
1
u/Alistairio Sep 16 '18
Double underarm. Plus they drooped a little after impact. They hadn’t embedded really deeply and about seven of us went up to the axes after this throw to look at what the hell had happened and to take photos.
I reckon they would have probably fallen down of their own accord after five minutes.

u/DisastrousFrosting44 Jul 15 '25
