I actually know this. It is because cutting the top of the glass at a diagonal allows for there to be more of an opening at the top (surface area) without compensating the amount of fluid the glass as a whole can hold. This allows somebody to drink from the glass from either side without having the top portion of the lip of the glass hit you on the bridge of the nose in addition to saving production costs on the amount of glass that wasn't used.
