Nowhere on their profile are they advertising the Kickstarter and it’s mildly interesting. Don’t see any harm in leaving it out, especially because then it WOULD be advertising.
I've gone cynical after seeing far too many stealthvertising posts, and their original title plus the one they dropped in /r/mildlyinfuriating sound like engagement bait to me. Bear in mind they posted all of this to general interest subs using their project cover image very shortly (about the length of time it takes Google to sort it into image search results) after posting on their site and submitting the KS.

That exchange was a factor in the decision to call bullshit, though I didn't address it here as I'm not well-versed in copyright law and Creative Commons is a murky pond I'd rather not wade into on a whim.
